Renting a Car in Greece

Does a US citizen need to have an international license in order to rent a car in Greece? Can one just use their state issued license?

The Greek law requires an international driver's license. You can pick one up at AAA for $15. You can rent a car without one, but if you don't take one with you and you get in an accident you will be in for a lot of grief. Is it worth the $15?

I'm interested if that law really exists. I have NEVER been asked for an international driver's license and have rented cars multiple times a year in Greece for over twenty years. Every car rental agency requires my US driver's license and nothing else except money. I have been stopped for speeding and the only thing the police were interested in was my US driver's license. And since the international driver's license is not translated into Greek as it is most other languages, hard to see what use it would be.

It's a common law not just in Greece but in other countries as well. You most likely won't be asked for and IDL by a rental agency. They're more interested in your normal driver's license because of the information it contains. The law might not always be enforced, but if you are involved in an accident and are asked for the IDL and you don't have it, not only might you be subject to prosecution, but the insurance policy you took out for the rental might very well be invalidated. It's just not worth the risk, even if it seems like a waste of money.

last month, Hertz (downtown athens office) requested my IDL when I was picking up my rental car.

would Hertz have denied me the rental car if I didn't have an IDL? Don't know. But it's easy & cheap enough to get the IDL, and you're prepared for any eventuality.

We rented a car from Avis (from the Athens airport) and we were asked to show an IDL when we picked it up. This was May 5, 2006.
