Rome

Visiting Rome for the first time this November.

What is the best way to get from the airport to Monti? Should I go w a transfer for approx. $80 ? There are 4 of us.

We have two tours. One leaves from Piazza Popolo and the other starts at the Vatican. What is the best way to get from Monti to Popolo or the Vatican very early in the morning?

Finally, I really would like to see the inside of the Pantheon. Should I buy tickets in advance? or is it okay to buy when we get there, as I am not really sure when we will be able to get there and have very limited time.

Thanks

I would book a transfer from FCO to your lodging. The train to Termini would cost $56 for the group, and then you'd probably need/want a taxi (or two) to the lodging. In addition to the fare, you'll be charged for each suitcase after the first piece.

"Monti" is not a small, compact area. You could be somewhat near a metro or bus stop... or not. To answer your questions with any accuracy, I would need an address in Monti and know how early is "very early." Most likely, you'd be safer time-wise to take taxis, esp. to the Vatican.

To be absolutely sure you can visit anything that requires tickets/reservations, it's always best to organize that in advance. How far in advance is the real question. As of today, availabilityfor the Pantheon in November seems pretty wide open, you only have to select an hour window and tickets are cheap... so cheap (5 euros for adults) you could book a couple of days/times and hope one of them works.

Tickets to the Pantheon are new for all of us - for ages I've always been able to just walk in. My preferred time has always been early am or later afternoon when the sun is lower in the sky and hence casts a long beam of light inside the Pantheon. Since it is Novermber, the sun is low in the sky all day long, so just pick any time when the sun will be high enough to shine through the oculus.

** Should I go w a transfer for approx. $80 ? There are 4 of us.**

Taxi would be 55 euro for 4 people (1 euro for each extra piece of luggage). That's for an official Comune di Roma taxi.

**We have two tours. One leaves from Piazza Popolo and the other starts at the Vatican. What is the best way to get from Monti to Popolo or the Vatican very early in the morning?**

If you wanted to use public transport, depending on where you are in Monti, you could catch the 117, get off on via del Tritone and walk the rest of the way or switch there to the 119 which goes to Piazza Popolo. For the Vatican, you could catch the pickpocket express (64) or the faster version (40). Unless by Vatican you mean Vatican Museums. In that case, I would take the metro. Cavour stop might be closest for you in Monti, change at Termini and take the other line to either Ottaviano or Cipro.

The last time I checked (recently) Rome Shuttle Limousine, an excellent private transfer service, cost the same as the taxi, with no charge for a reasonable amount of luggage. They will meet you in the arrivals hall and help with the luggage. Rome Cabs (not a taxi), another private service, is also excellent. $80 seems excessive for a private transfer.

I just checked prices for transfers because I was curious, since airportshuttle.it, which I have used many times, have really increased their prices the last couple of years, with the current price being 56 Euro for up to 2 people and 12 Euro for each additional person, which would indeed be 80 Euro for 4 people. (I used to be able to use them for less than the cost of a taxi.)

Rome Shuttle Limousine is currently 55 Euro, but that is also only for up to 2 people. Surprisingly, the website doesn't show how much it is for additional people.

Rome Cabs is currently 100 Euro for up to 2 people and 120 Euro for 3-4 people.

The advantage of a transfer over taxi is, as noted, they meet you right when you come out of baggage claim and help with luggage and you don't have to find a taxi. (I don't know how far it is to the taxi line, because I never took one.)

I would go for the transfer service even if it is a bit more expensive. There is nothing quite so welcoming as someone waiting for you as you exit the airport with your name on a sign. They will know where you are going and take the stress out of navigating to the taxi line and making sure the driver knows how to get to your destination.

I sent a message to Rome Shuttle Limousine. They say that it's €70 for four people for a daytime pickup.

It's not much less than your quote, so I would stick with your service if you've had good experiences with them
