Rome in a day and a half - HELP!!!

We are arriving in Rome at approx. 2pm on Oct 28th, checking into Delle Nazioni (close to Trevi Fountain), spending the next day in Rome then flying home. Any ideas for an itinerary which will give us the highlights? Also, any personal, reasonably priced, restaurant favourites close to our hotel would be much appreciated.

Thank you so much for all of your help.

Spend that afternoon exploring the Trevi fountain, Spanish Steps in one direction and Pantheon and Piazza Navone in the other. Next morning go to St Peters and The Vatican museums - you can do both in a long morning if you don't dawdle, then go to the Forum and Colosseum. Use the metro to get around where possible.

Good suggestion from jjester.

When you go to the Vatican the next morning, the FIRST thing you should do is climb the 495 steps to the top of the basilica (get there by the time it opens, which may be 08:00, but check for sure). An elevator can help you avoid the first 170 something (if I have the number right) steps.

Also, for walking around, I suggest that you buy the Fodors City Pack for Rome, which has a great walking tour mapped out, and transfer it, using a felt-tip, to a plastic coated map of Rome. Also, the Rick Steves guide for Rome has a couple great walking tours. Use different colors for each walking tour.

If you do the Vatican and the Colosseum stuff, I would also suggest taking the metro from one to the other. It's very fast. You can buy a one day pass at the tobbaco shops. There is a metro stop near the Vatican Museum and another near St Peters and then one near the Colosseum. They are on different lines, so you will have to change from line B to line A at the Termini station.

That's great - thanks for your help. Do you have reasonable restaurant recommendations for the hotel area? Also, would you recommend a tour for the Vatican? If so, who?
