Rome-Pompeii

I have gone on two day trips from Rome to Pompeii. The first time I took a shuttle bus through Enjoy Rome. It runs from April through October, according to the website www.enjoyrome.com. It leaves at 7:30 AM and you have around four hours on your own at the ruins. Back in Rome in time for supper. This was a very relaxing and easy way to get to Pompeii.
The second time I took the train from Rome to Naples and the commuter train Circumvesuviana from Naples to the Pompeii Scavi station, which is directly outside the entrance to the ruins. This is less expensive than the shuttle and you can stay as long as you want. Trains are frequent.

Yes. First fast train from Rome to Naples depart 6:45 and arrives 8:20, taking about 1:30. Fast trains about every 40 minutes.
The Circumvesuviana takes about half a hour to Pompeii. Also very frequent. Stop is very close to the ruins.
So, definitely doable. Many people will spend about 3-4 hours at Pompeii and then visit the archaeological museum in Naples where most for the artifacts from Pompeii are stored and displayed. [Many at Pompeii are replicas.]

You can definitely see Pompeii as a day trip from Rome. Am I the only one who was disappointed by Pompeii? I guess it must be because I had seen some documentaries about it and expected so much more. Also, the artefacts are mostly in Naples. And, Pompeii is so touristy (to be expected).

I personally thought that Pompeii exceeded my expections, but a huge part of it was being able to see the antiquities that were recovered and are now in the Naples Archaeological Museum. By seeing both the ruins and the artifacts, one could really get a sense of what life may have been like. I thought it was fascinating, but I'm not sure I'd have the same impression without seeing the museum as well. Going from Rome to Pompeii and back in one day seems entirely possible, but adding in Naples, which I consider essential, might be difficult, if not awfully exhausting.
