salzburg hotel

Thinking about booking two nights at the Pension Bergland in May. Has anyone stayed there? Or do you have better recommendations?

If you type in the word Bergland into the search box, highlight the country Austria in the box to the right and click find, you will get six or seven references to Bergland. Every one was positive about the cleanliness, friendliness and location. 83-86 Euro for a double in a *** Salzburg hotel is pretty good--and if you're driving, the free parking saves you another 10-12 Euro per night. I tend to prefer the Altstadt location myself (Blaue Gans, Am Dom are two nice ones, though both are more expensive than Bergland). If I were to stay across the river, the Bergland looks like a very nice option. Enjoy.

Is transportation from Pension Bergland to RR station easy? And to old town? We will not have a car.

anitas,

If the prospect of sleeping in Salzburg's alstadt gives you "sticker shock", then consider staying on the other side of the river in the friendly, comfy confines of the Hotel-Pension Jedermann (www.hotel-jedermann.com).

The Jedermann is nicely situated, a pleasant 10-minute stroll from Mirabellgarten, offers bright, tidy lodging , and is most fairly priced. It's a terrific place for a couple overnights in Salzburg.

Vera-

We walked to Bergland from the train station. Maybe 10-15 minutes? I'm sure you could easily get a taxi if you didn't want to walk.

Anitas- I have stayed at the Bergland and the Jedermann several times. They are within a block of each other, and the Bergland is closer to downtown. Both are about a block from the nearest bus stop. They are both an easy 5 minute cab ride from the Bahnhof- should be less than 5-6 Euros. Parking is free.
The Bergland has an elevator if that is meaningful to you. Otherwise, both are acceptable. I would return there with no qualms-
If you are interested in an American style hotel, the Renaissance is only 2 blocks from the Bahnhof and about a 20 minute walk to old town directly along the river. The breakfast was better than the other 2 places but parking is extra. They have all kinds of special rates- I got the senior rate for a double for 85 Euros on a weekend in September last year.
Two nights in Salzburg is just about right. Get a map at the Bahnhof and enjoy.

What a coincidence! Not 10 minutes ago I came across a (very negative) review of the Bergland in the "community" (Austria)section of Frommer's website. You might want to have a look at it.

anitas,
Here's the Frommers post referred to above, but I wouldn't worry about it-it didn't ring true to me:
