Salzburg walking tour
I am going to Salzburg on business and will want to see the main sights of the city. I know there is the Sound of Music tour, but am wondering if it is really necessary. Can one walk around the city to see the sights depicted in the film? Wondering if anyone has done this.

I did the Sound of Music tour a couple years ago. It takes you all through the countryside - most of the "sites" from the movie aren't actually in town.
The tour itself was cheesy fun - everyone singing loudly on the bus and whatnot, but what made it worth it for me was the stop at Wolfgangsee - a beautiful village on the lake.

The old part of Salzburg is very small and walkable. I took a one hour bus tour from Panorama (by minivan). It was a great way to get acquainted with the city. I returned to most of the places on foot that day.
After visiting the Fortress, I highly recommend continuing your walk on Monschberg. Instead of turning right to go back down to the city, turn left and stay on the highroads. This will take you on a paved path towards the Museum of Modern Art. Along the way you will find great places to investigate--gorgeous scenery. Stop at Stadlm cafe for lunch above the city.
Only note---I was planning on taking the Monschberg lift down from the museum, but was not able to because you must buy tickets at the bottom. Solution-If you walk back a short ways there is a path down to the city.
If you like beer, you must visit Augustiner Braustubl, a short walk from the old town. You can go there for a beer or purchase food at one of the counters and find your seat. It is right behind a large church.
I did not go on the SOM Tour because it would have taken too much time for my short visit. I hear mixed reviews. The one hour tour brought me by the house they used for the Von Trapp mansion--Leopolds Kron, so I was happy with that. Next time I visit Salzburg I will do a Panorama Lakes and Mountains Tour. You get to see a lot of the Lake Region. So beautiful! You will enjoy Salzburg!!

As several people have pointed out, Salzburg is very small. You can hit the highlight on a self guided tour just wandering between the Hohen Salzburg Fortress on the hill that is served by a fanicular, Mozarts' house, the concert hall, the cathedral and the Mirabelle Garden, and Festival Concert Halle. If you are there at the right time of the year you might find a concert you like. Check for schedules at the tourist office on Mozart Platz.
Treat yourself to a wonderful dinner at the Striftskeller St. Peter (Charlemagne ate here). It has bee open for over 1000 years. It is next to St Peter's church at the foot of Monchsberg. eat Austrian cusine with strolling musicians.
