The highlands of Scotland is a huge, beautiful area. You can do day trips to it from Edinburgh, and there are some organized bus tours that do just that. However, I would spend a day each in Glasgow and Edinburgh, and then 3 days in the highlands, if you can. They are beautiful!
You have many options. There is a 'castle trail' near Aberdeen, as well as a 'whiskey trail' in the same area, and along the Spey river. You could spend time in the Loch Lomond/Trossachs area. You could travel through the Grampian Mountains, and I think there's even a ski area there - February should be great for that

The weather in Scotland is colder than in Ireland at any time of the year. If you like snow in the mountans go to Scotland. Despite the short days much of Ireland where the average temp is 40F (60F in summer) most places can be enjoyed very well in winter. I really enjoyed driving from Edinburgh to Inverness and then to Glascow. However there has been much more hotel building in Ireland in recent years and a far better selection of hotels as a result. It is quite feasible to arrive in Ireland with nothing booked in advance except a car in my experience. Incidentally next year really cheap train and bus fares will be available in Ireland for senior citizen tourists. I really like the Killarney area in south-west Ireland ,have been there many times and am looking forward to being there soon. Many on Fodors like Dingle which is near Killarney and both of those made the top 100 places in the world to visit on www.tripadvisor.com

You can't do justice to Scotland in a lifetime never mind in 5 days, but you could get a wee taster.
Whereabouts in Scotland does your book start?
Go onto the Travelling Folk page on the BBC website and you will find links to most of the traditional music stuff in the country. That might govern where your footsteps lead you.
