Seeking France suggested destination (aside from Paris)
Hi! I'm planning a trip to France in September and am trying to decide where other than Paris to go. The total length of the trip will likely be about 2 weeks, and I'm planning about 5 days in Paris. I have already been to Versailles, Loire valley chateaux, Bordeaux, Marseille and Cassis, and the Limousin area. I will be traveling by train, by myself.
I am looking for one or two other destinations and am leaning towards Avignon since I haven't really "done" Provence. I was thinking of Avignon and Aix, but from what I have read recently, Aix is a less interesting sightseeing destination and more of a city. So, what are your thoughts on Avignon and is there another Provence destination I could combine with Avignon? Or, in your opinion, should I skip Provence in favor of another region such as Normandy or Alsace?
Looking forward to your suggestions!

Since you're going in September, you might think about Burgundy--beautiful in the late summer/early fall. You can take the TGV to Dijon in just about an hour, spend a day or two there, then take the train (non-TGV) down to Beaune to spend 2 days.
After that you could continue down to Provence and base yourselv in Avignon for easy train travel to other area, such as the city of Arles. You could also make bus trips to the Pont du Gard, Les Baux, and St-Rémy.

Two of the nicest places in France to be in September are Burgundy and Alsace, when the grape harvest is coming in. However, to really appreciate them, you'd want to have a car.
Nonetheless, you could certainly enjoy Dijon and Beaune by train. Likewise Strasbourg and Colmar. You could also rent a car for a day or two once there to get out to the villages and vineyards.

Hi PS,
You might find some ideas in my trip report of our visit to the valleys of the Lot, Tarn and Dordogne.
