Seville to Madrid airport

Planning a trip to Spain, and we need some help from Fodors' experts traveling between Madrid and Seville.

Arriving in Madrid early, what is the best way to get to Seville that same morning?

The return flight is 11:30 am on a Tuesday. What is the best way to get from Seville to Madrid airport?
Fly the same day from Seville.
Fly Monday from Seville to Madrid and stay in an airport hotel.
On Monday, take a train from Seville to Madrid, stay in a hotel near the train station, and then take the train or cab to the airport.

Thanks in advance
Greg

We did a Madrid and Seville trip this past fall. We took the train back to Madrid from Seville the day before our flight. We took a taxi the next morning to the airport but could have also taken a bus or the metro.

Many airlines sell through tickets up to Sevilla, with a plane change at Madrid or whereever.

Would you recommend flights?

Would you recommend this as opposed to flight?
What Hotel did you stay at in Madrid?

It’s a two hour train ride and easier than flying to me.

We stayed at the Catalonia Los Cortes our last night in Madrid. It’s a nice hotel. We rented an apartment around the block from it for our four night stay in Madrid.

For arrival day, if you haven't booked a through flight to Sevilla (but....there are only 3-4 MAD-SVQ flights per day--can you make the 11:35 am?),
I would take the Express Airport bus from your terminal (it departs from all terminals--5 euros-with luggage racks) or a taxi (30 euros) to Atocha rail station and catch the AVE to Sevilla Santa Justa.
The Madrid-Sevilla high-speed AVE departs hourly. Check the current schedule at www.renfe.com

For your Tuesday 11:30 am departure from Madrid, you'll need to take the AVE from Sevilla the Monday evening before and spend the night in Madrid because the first Sevilla-Madrid AVE doesn't get to Atocha until 9:15 am. If yours is an international flight you should be at the airport 3 hours in advance for plenty of cushion.

Thanks, Maribel!
It is an international flight that will land on a Wednesday at 8:30 am, and will be able to take the 11:30 am flight to Sevilla. Can you recommend an airline for that short flight?
We will take your advice on the return and arrive in Madrid the day before to stay at a hotel near Atocha.

Again thanks!
I knew a Fodors' expert would help with the details!

Are you not planning on spending any time in Madrid? Conventional wisdom on this site is that if you were planning on combining a stay in Sevilla with a few days in Madrid, you should go straight to Sevilla on landing in Madrid, whether by air or train, and put all your time in Madrid at the end of the trip which puts you in the right place for your return flight. However if you aren't planning to spend time in Madrid itself, that won't apply.

Been to Madrid before, but Easter prevented us for going to Sevilla. This is a make up trip.

The 11:35 am flight is an Iberia/Vueling code share flight.
But are you flying to MAD in on a One World Alliance carrier? That makes a difference. One World (BA, Iberia, Vueling, American...) flights arrive and depart from Terminal 4, while Star Alliance (United) and Sky Team (Delta) arrive and depart from Terminal 1. These terminals are 3 km. apart. So if coming in to T1 and departing from T4, one has to take a (free) shuttle bus that departs during the day every 5 minutes.

This summer we thought we had ample time with a 2 hr. layover, coming in on BA at T4S (the satellite used for international One World flights) and departing on Vueling from T4, but we barely made it because of the huge crowds in the immigration hall, the long walk to reach the underground train connecting the the satellite terminal with the main terminal, then another long walk to reach our gate at T4. So the 2 hours between flights from T4S to T4 sometimes isn't that much of a cushion, at least in high season. Our luggage was checked through, both flights being on the same ticket.

Maribel, you are a fountain of information!
We will be arriving on Terminal one at 8:45 am that might be enough to get to the gate on time, depending on the crowds in late August. I don't know if this is a popular time so a later flight might be the best.
If the lay over between flights must be extended then the AVE from Madrid to Sevilla would be the best option. What do you think?
Thanks
Greg

I wouldn't plan on making that 11:35 am flight from T4 if you land (and maybe not on time) at T1 at 8:45 am--a popular time when many flights arrive at around the same time and clog up immigration--and your luggage isn't checked through because you didn't purchase both flights on the same ticket. Crowds can be super heavy at Barajas in late August, ime!

I would take the AVE from Puerta de Atocha. From T1 you can either take the Airport Express bus with luggage racks (5 euros) directly from the arrivals area of T1 or hop in a taxi (flat rate of 30 euros) to reach Atocha.

Can we reserve a seat on the AVE in advance? Or would it be better to get the ticket at the gate?

Yes, you can reserve in advance at www.renfe.com or via the app.
There's a distinct financial advantage to that if.... everything goes smoothly.
However, there's a "but"......if your plane arrives significantly late and you miss your pre-booked train, you'll need to pay the difference in fare when booking the next train unless you purchase the most expensive "Premium" fare, which negates the savings of booking ahead. Been there, done that.
Here are the fare structures:

virginiafish,
Renfe has changed its fare structures.
On the AVE trains, what used to be the old "turista" fare (economy) is now either "Básico" (no changes) and "Elige Estándar" (1 free change).
What used to be "preferente" is now "Elige Confort".

Only the current Prémium fare includes a complimentary meal & drinks delivered to one's seat, seat selection, plus access to the Sala Club (vip lounge), 2 hours prior to departure. These Sala Clubs are found in the larger Renfe stations.
The Atocha Sala Club just reopened after a million dollar renovation (first in 20 years).

I just purchase the "Elige Confort" fare where cars have a 2-1 seat configuration (fewer & larger seats per car=quieter ride). These "Elige Confort" seats are located in the former "preferente" cars.
