Basch,
On our trip last week, I packed 2 zip lock bags for hubby & me like a Chinese puzzle. They both just barely closed. I don't think I could have crammed a toothpick in them.

I was glad I brought along extra bags for the return trip because these took a beating along the way.

Also, make sure that your containers with liquids are marked as 3 oz or less. Sometimes you get refillable bottles that may be 3oz, but are not marked. I carry a 1 qt bag for my "liquids", but then also pack all medication in a separate small bag in my carry-on just in case (includes inhalers and saline solution.)

ira: (welcome back BTW)

"The only liquids and gels that you can carry on must be 3 oz or less and fit into the 1 qt ziplock bag.

You may NOT bring any other liquids or gels in your carryon. They have to go in checked luggage."

Not entirely true. One CAN bring other liquids such as prescription and OTC meds, baby bottles, etc that don't have to be 3 oz and don't have to fit in the same quart bag as the other liquids. They will be screened spearately, just like the quart bag.

I would just like to make people aware of an incident I observed while going through security in Athens.

The elderly gentleman on line in front of me was carrying a bottle of liquid prescription medication that was clearly much larger than 3 oz. He showed this to the inspector at the same time he showed them the items in his ziploc bag.

They pulled him aside and called a supervising agent to question him further about this.

It was all handled very politely. But the security agents were very insistent that if he was not planning to use this medication (during a 10 hour flight) they wanted to put this bottle with the checked luggage.

After much discussion, the man convinced them he needed the medication and they allowed him to carry it on board.

So, if you are carrying a liquid medication larger than 3 oz., be prepared to be challenged.

Hi Jan,

You are correct.

However, within the context of the OP's question, I was trying to keep it simple.

This just happened to me last week at the Manchester NH airport. I had my 1 qt bag with my 3 oz or less liquids, etc. I also declared my medications (which a few were over 3oz). One of the TSA agents made me put them in a bag, another said no I didn't need to do that (they fit, but what if they didnt?) I didn't argue and get in the middle of the two agents power struggle, but just be aware...

I was just in DFW and MCI (kansas city) and the recording that played endlessly said "Remember 311 - 3oz liquids in One quart bag in One carry-on"

Just flew from Minneapolis to Dayton, Ohio and back. My quart ziploc was crammed as full as it could be with everything from deodorant, contact solution, lipstick, lotion, etc. all in 3 oz. or less containers. I also had another ziploc with all my OTC meds and prescription meds in it. I put both bags in the little container at the security point and nothing was ever questioned. When I got home, I realized I had forgot to put my small (1.5 oz.) aerosol can of hairspray in the ziploc, but they never questioned it. I did not check any luggage, but had a daypack and a large backpack that I carried on the plane. I figured they would have questioned the hairspray. It had totally slipped my mind in my rush to get to the airport. I guess after having travelled many times recently and never checking any luggage, I am surprised at how many times the screeners are blabbing to the guy next to them and don't really seem to pay very good attention. And I am talking about the guy sitting at the screen when the stuff goes through the x-ray portion of the security check! It is a bit scary to me to think of how complacent they seem to get at times! I know it is easy for anyone to become used to a job or whatever, but this is not good if they are supposed to be checking everything, so to speak. I also saw places in the airports where it would be easy for someone to get in and that is a scary thought also!
