spend last night Taormina or Catania airport hotel?

Dear Fodor Forum,
I realize this may be a subjective question, but I always appreciate opinions from experienced Sicily travelers.
After 2 nights in Taormina, I've booked our last night in a Catania airport hotel as we're flying out the next day around 9:30 a.m. It would certainly be possible to spend the last night in lovely Taormina, and then hire a driver to take us to the airport the next morning, although being close to the airport on departure day has its advantages (less worry about traffic, etc). Thoughts? Opinions?
Thank you!

You will find many posters here want to be s close as possible to their departure airport, especially in an unfamiliar area. However, during our first time in Taormina, we stayed the extra night enjoying that wonderful city. The Catania airport is only about one hour from Taormina, which is not different from the distance many of us travel all the time from home to airport. We vote in favor of Taormina.

I'm one who prefers being near the hotel, but it depends on your comfort level, how willing you are to get up early to ensure a cushion, how much in advance of your flight you need to be at the airport....

I have been stuck in a traffic jam on that highway to the airport due to an accident. It created a full hour delay. It only happened once but I will never forget the stress. As kja says, as long as you build in a cushion...

You could also explore all day into evening in Taormina, and have the driver take you to the airport hotel to sleep.

The last airport bus leaves Catania at 20.45. Fare: 7.50 EUR/pax online, 8.20 EUR/pax in the bus.

If it was me, I'd try and stay at a hotel reasonably close to the airport. Less stress before the flight is important and the closer you are to the airport, the easier it makes your morning.

We had a similar fight time, stayed in Taormina, hired a driver to take us to CTA.

How about spending the afternoon and night in Catania? It’s quite an interesting city, much more so than Taormina, which is indeed beautiful but overrun with tourists.

To visit Catania make sure to arrive before the fish market closes! It closes around 1pm.

Thank you all for weighing in. We ended up spending the day on a tour of Mt. Etna and Alcantara Gorge, then took a bus to Catania and spent the night near the airport. I think it was the best decision for me, since I tend to worry a lot about missing flights!

Sounds like a good choice.
