St Cirq and others: Looking for Dordogne recommendations
We are spending a week in a self-catering cottage outside Curemonte, near Beaulieu -sur-Dordogne. We leave in 7 days.
We know this eastern stretch of the river very well and look forward to re-visiting Carennac, Turenne, Martel, Beaulieu, Figeac, etc.
We have seen the "big" sights further west/ downriver (Domme, Sarlat, Beynac, Larocque-Gageac). Yet we really do not know that area well. How might we expand our horizons without TOO much driving in a day?
On a previous visit, we encountered the gardens of Meyrissac and Eyrignac and loved them both. If there were some other really fine gardens, this would be the season to visit them! Suggestions?
We have visited few castles apart from the Chateau de Biron and Castelnaud. Any suggestions for historic sites would be appreciated. Prehistory does not hugely interest me but I could be persuaded...
Also looking for noteworthy towns. I've seen some references here to Montignac but don't know what it is notable for.
I hope you will tell me your favourite little-known places. Or your little-known favourite places.
Thanks -- time is short!! (we just booked our flights today!!)

Do you have my Dordogne itinerary??? E-mail me at [email protected] if you want one.
Have you explored south??? Figeac, Cahors, Lot River, St Cirq Lapopie, Gorges de l'Aveyron.
St Cirq is out here in the San Francisco Bay Area for her daughter's graduation. We'll be visiting her tomorrow.

Hi, Tedgale.
I'm sure Stu will cover all the bases, and I'm off for a busy day in Berkeley, but to name some of my favorites:
St-Cirq-du-Bugue (duh)
Monpazier
Chateau de l'Herme
Castelnaud
l'Abbé de Cadouin
St-Chamassy
Montignac is where Lascaux II is, but it's also a picturesque little town.

Chateau de l'Herme and St-Chamassy are new names to me. I will research them, thanks.
Stu: I will email you.
We stayed once in Montpezat-de-Quercy and have visited numerous spots between Toulouse and the Dordogne, including those you mention. I think on this trip we would like to focus on the areas north and west of where we're staying. There is so much of the Dordogne that we do not know....esp. those areas away a bit from the river....

Have you visited the Chateau (and gardens) de Losse? Only about 5 km south of Montignac in the Vezere valley. Lovely spot.http://www.chateaudelosse.com/en/index.htm

We are now in the vicinity of Curemonte (just north of the Lot/ Correze border) at Le Fleuret. Our 2 bedroom, 2 storey stone cottage is a delight. The saltwater pool, bordered by a garden of perennials and looking across at the 3 chateaux of Curemonte, is a dream. All is "luxe, calme et volupte".

A trip report will follow in due course........
