Most hotels are within walking distance from bus stops, and the in-city service costs 1 euro. If you rent a car, you will be hard pressed finding parking. The bus service is great.

My wife and her sister recently returned from a trip to Positano. They rented a car in Rome and drove all the way and back without too much trouble.

While in Positano however they never drove at all. It was a combination of the driving being just too difficult and public transportation being a more viable alternative. They took taxi's to various restaurants at night. In some instances the individual restaurants would provide drivers.

It depends where you are staying, some hotels are close to bus service, others are a bit of a trek.

Use the Positano buses! A car within Positano is useless and a headache. We were happy to park our rental car once we arrived and to not move it until we departed. Intra-Positano buses are 1E each. The buses to other places on the Amalfi Coast are also very reasonable. I think it was maybe 2.60E from Positano to Amalfi. Plus, the experience of riding on the bus as it barrels past another bus with mere millimeters between them is an experience not to be missed.

Hi ct,

Especially in the high season, a car will be more hindrance than help.

Positano to Amalfi or Sorrento is 1.30 Euros on the SITA bus. An additional 1.80 Euros from Amalfi to Salerno, or 3.15 Euros from Sorrento to Naples by Circumvesuviana train.

Also remember that there is ferry service from Positano.

Forget the rental car, take the bus!

This question reminds me of when I was planning my stay in Positano. It's hard to visualize this wonderful town by the pictures and descriptions alone.

A car is of little use and that's what makes this town special.
