Suggestions, please

Two weeks early October planned for Italy with all travel by train out of Zurich. Will have 4 hour trip to Varenna for three nights, four nights open, then three in Florence and three in Rome. Would appreciate suggestions for the four days between Varenna and Florence. Want to see CT, but thinking about a day trip only. Many thanks!!!!!!!!!

My first suggestion would be to post your question with a descriptive title, such as

What to do with four days between Varenna and Florence?

I'd probably spend two nights in Venice and add two nights in Rome. Rome has so much to see, the Vatican will take a full day -- 5 wouldn't be too much there.

Happy travels,

Jules

I would spend three nights in Venice and add one night in Rome.

If you wait long enough you'll probably receive every conceivable numerical combination to this but good luck anyway.

The Cinque terra is on the route you will travel from Varenna to Pisa. This is a very beautiful eight-mile hike between five towns on the coast.

Another option is to go to one of the towns, perhaps Stresa, on Lago Maggiore and take the ferry to visit Isola Bella.

Lalaby, I am traveling by train from Zurich also in September. We are going to Milan for the Grand Prix, and then on to Santa Margherita for the week to explore the CT as well as the other coastal areas. I would suggest the same for 3 days with an added day in Rome or, as Eloise suggested, 4 days in Venice.

On our way back, we are stopping in Lugano to break up the long train ride and then two nights in Lucerne before catching our plane home from Zurich.

Many thanks for all suggestions and information.
Not only was my title vague, but knowing that I
had already been to Milan and Venice would have
helped, right? Appreciate all the information. Be
patient, I am learning.

There will be no "trial by error" here! You must come to Fodor's FULLY knowledgeable in how these forums work, otherwise you'll be lambasted, drawn, quartered, and put up for public ridicule. LOL.

Happy travels, Lalaby...we're a rowdy bunch, and we got a few New Yorkers here, so if you don't get a group hug right away, that might help explain it.

Jules,

The Friendly One, who doesn't live anywhere near NYC, but loves 'em anyway.

We will be patient with you, and I don't think that you have been "lambasted, drawn, quartered, and put up for public ridicule" at this point.

But you have a chance to let "us" help you to help yourself, and try to ensure that the replies don't become less friendly...

... by actually re-posting your original question, and providing all the info you think you should provide - - in the body of the message, and more importantly in the NEW message header.

If you want a specific suggestion, I would try...

"Seeking ideas for four nights, in the first week of our 13 night Italy itinerary, particularly between Varenna and Florence".

Jules, I needed that reply. I hope I am
not one of those overly sensitive southern
women. Keep inspiring!!!!!!!!!!

Lalaby, with all due respect to Rex, who is one of the most dependable posters here, I do think he tends to suggest message titles that would do as titles of Ph.D. dissertations...

Something shorter like "Four nights between Varenna and Florence?" would, I think, tell everyone more or less what you're looking for. The fact that it's in the first week of a 14-night itinerary can safely, in my opinion, be relegated to the body of the message.
