Sunday Food Market in Paris?

On the advice of Fodorites and Chowhound, we are not going to go to a big dinner on New Year's Eve. We will be having lunch that day at L'Atelier Joël Robuchon.

What markets will be open on Sunday (new year's eve)? We want to go and get some food to make a nice dinner for that evening. We are staying in the Opera area, but are willing to travel a little ways. I am a foodie, so seeing a Paris market is a must on my trip.

Thanks in advance.

The Bastille (Richard Lenoir) market would probably be best for you and is one of the best, anyway, I think. It runs on the blvd by that name just north of the Bastille metro stop and is open Sundays. I do not know about NY eve, of course.

Supermarkets are open on Monday. Most street markets would normally be closed, but many will make an exception for December 31st, particularly delis and seafood vendors.

We were there a few years ago on New Year’s Eve, staying on the Rue Cler pedestrian shopping street. All the shops and stands were open well into late afternoon, and business was brisk!

Who knows if any restaurants and /or food markets will be open on Christmas Day? My daughter and family will be arriving on Christmas Day, and are staying in an apartment across from the Louvre on Rue de Rivoli. I recall being in Paris during the holidays in '98 and nothing appeared to be open in that same area either on Chrsitmas Day or New Years day. Any information would be of help. Thank you.

Thanks for posing the question. We'll be arriving on 12/26 and staying through 1/8. We're hoping to find a market with the great spit-roasted chickens dripping on potatoes to serve on New Year's day. YUM!!!

Stu,

I'm not sure about food markets, but I think the small "convenience" stores may be open, for buying some basic supplies.

For restaurants, the brasseries of the Flo group are open--www.flobrasseries.com and another one, www.brasseriegallopin.com is open. Given the location of their apartment, I would imagine that the restaurant in the Hotel du Louvre is also open--Brasserie du Louvre.

Head over to Rue Mouffetard in the fifth (not difficult by Metro). The street is lined with food shops - continual market in a lot of ways. You will find a wide variety of cheese shops, wine boutiques, specialty food stores, bakeries, meat and fish purveyors, fresh fruit and vegetables (roast chickens for sure). I don't know for sure but I would bet they are all open New Year's Eve day.

I can't believe there wont be lots of markets open on New Year's Eve is Paris. Lots of cooking to be done for the Reveillon, and certainly in the southwest, where I live, there will be markets full of lots of goodies.

People have to get those oysters and foie gras, after all!

If you really want to do your shopping at a proper market, I think it would be best to play it safe by going on the Sunday to buy any special essentials for dinner. I'm not sure that many street markets will be open on the Monday as that is traditionally their "day off".

Of course you'll find plenty of traditional food stores, delis (traiteurs), Monoprix, etc. open on the 31st (although they are likely to be very busy).

Two fantastic food halls which are likely to be open on the 31st are the Grande Epicerie de Paris (which is the food hall of the department store Le Bon Marché at Sèvres Babylone metro), and the Lafayette Gourmet foodhall in Galeries Lafayette (not in the main store building - it's upstairs from the menswear store on Boulevard Haussman - there's also an entrance on Rue de Provence). Both of them have an incredible array of foodstuffs (real foodie heaven) and are fun to visit even if you aren't planning on buying much!

I would suggest going to the organic food market on Sunday on the blvd Raspail in front of the Hotel Lutetia. There is a wide selection of fresh foods that claim to be organic. It is not to be missed.

If you have a Picard frozen food store near where you are staying, it will provide you with items beyond your dreams. I have never yet met a French person who contested the idea that Picard is top quality, from the capon stuffed with foie gras to the mashed potatoes with truffles, not forgetting of course the crème brûlée.

They'll be open on both Sunday and Monday. www.picard.fr

Oh yes another vote for Picard. A fantastic shop.

(Was gutted when I moved from France to Belgium and discovered they don't have branches of Picard here. But then - joy of joys! - found out that they do deliver to Brussels, so my freezer is once again stuffed to the gills with Picard goodies).

Hubby and I picked up wonderful food at Picard's for those two nights we wished to dine in during our February trip. When I told the gentleman I rented the apartment from that we had gone there he actually, truly stuck his nose in the air and commented about "who would go to a frozen food place in a city like Paris." I nicely told him the line around 4:30 p.m. is out the door, so, obviously, the working Parisians were "going to a frozen food place in Paris."

I ended up taking lots of marketing info home from Picard's, thinking it is a perfect store for urban locales all over the U.S.

And thanks for the reminder about food shops on Rue Mouffetard.

My husband and I spent a week in Paris a few years ago at a friend's apt when she went back to the US for the holidays and we went to the markets on the rue Daguerre on New Year's Eve and bought a feast of capon, oysters, champagne etc., that we then cooked ourselves before heading to the Champs d'Elysées for the evening. So yes, the markets are open.

texstout,
Enjoy your lunch at Robuchon. We've gone 3 or 4 times and will probably put it on the list to repeat again on our next trip. It's fantastic.
