Very much enjoyed the report. Lucky you for having a niece who likes to travel, and travels well. Our niece turned 14 the year we moved to Austria, and not once could we convince her to visit. She didn't think Europe was "interesting." We think she thought boys were more interesting; she is now 21, married with a 3 year-old and living in the same small town she grew up in.

annhig, I agree with your sentiment. To her credit our niece is finishing her bachelors degree and will graduate in the spring, a good thing, but she plans to remain in the area because hubby gave up his college scholarship to get a job to pay the bills. Niece's career path is portable, but the two of them have an uphill climb for the foreseeable future.

oh dear, fourfor, that is an uphill climb or even struggle. But who is to say that the conventional route is best - at the age of 63 I still have my two young adult children at home with me when others my age have grown up grandchildren!

Awesome Trip Report!
I LOVED your trip report. So much helpful information and gorgeous pictures too. I'm starting to plan my trip for this fall and am hoping to include Munich, Rothenburg and Salzburg so there was a lot I learned from you. Thank you for posting.

After reading about your smooth and uneventful trip to Spain

HI Mel, licking your wounds but I guess planning the next few escapes? Though none of know exactly when we'll be able to travel internationally.
Queensland borders are still closed, as are the Western Australia and Northern Territory borders. International travel is banned for now. It seems past time for them to re-open state borders but I guess it's better to be safe. Australia currently has very few active cases of COVID-19 but we all know it doesn't take much to suddenly become a huge problem.

Kay - yeah, we've had to cancel three international trips in the past few months. Ever the optimist, I'm consoling myself by planning an extended trip to Europe, timing unknown. The idea is to have the research done so we can go at the drop of a hat when we're able and comfortable about doing so.
We also plan to make several short road trips within our state this summer. We usually don't travel in the summer due to crowds, but are making an exception this year and taking this opportunity to revisit some favorite spots in Colorado.
I'm not aware of specific state border closures here in the US. There probably are some, but I've not kept track.
I can't help but think Western Australia would be a good place to be during a state closure....given its massive size, one could still do quite a bit, no?

Just enjoying a re read of this and reflecting on how different things are since your return.
It was a great trip for your niece and hopefully she will catch the travel bug!

Your comment re West Australia being a good place to explore was very tempting Mel.
But it was short lived optimism from us here in South Aust. as it seems we would still have to isolate for 14 days if going west!
(OK for West Aussies to come here without isolation...)
Oh well - worth a short bit of travel research.

love_travel_Aus - oh yes, Hanhdorf and chocolate! A favorite memory for sure!
Our first mini road trip came to a bad end unfortunately. Two beautiful days of hiking...and then a lovely early morning hike to a waterfall that ended abruptly when I took a spill at a river crossing, fell with a thud and broke my right wrist. We had to walk 90 minutes back to the car, then take a 4x4 road back to the highway and then drive 30 minutes back to town and Urgent Care. The break was too severe for them to handle, so I ended up in the ER.
It looks like I might be headed to surgery soon, just waiting for Monday so I can find an orthopedist for as assessment.
So, my Fodor's time will be spent reading, as typing this short response with my left hand has been an ordeal!
