The Return of the Son of Isabel's Italy: a Venetian photo essay

Forty Fotos of Venice.

Fondamenta Barbarigo. Odd coincidence: soon after taking this shot in Dorsoduro, we bumped into Countess Tudi Sammartini, main character of the doc 'The Venice Syndrome'. Then the following morn, we also chanced across BBC Travel doc presenter Francesco Da Mosto.

Big dog in Cannaregio. He says, "Va bene a cosi osei scampai!"

Little dog in Giudecca. She says, "Eh, cia parli tuti stanieri especioso il stupido fotografi Canadese!"

Burano during the golden hour (tip: *always take the very last vaparetto back, for best lagoon atmosphere).

as above

as above again

Something funny. Student Venetophiles at La Fenice Opera House in San Marco (see sign).

Something mysterious. Read the name of the distant bridge at the end of this rio di San Provolo, then compare it with the caption at the bottom of the art in that newspaper. A complete fluke along the Fondamenta l'Osmarin ('rosemary') in Castello!

Red peppers: OCIO!!

Red teen.

Murano mirror reflection.

The west end of Dorsoduro.

Bunchabridges1.

Bunchabridges2.

Ponte Parucheta ('wig') and its neighbour in S. Croce.

Beneath a bridge.

View from a vaparetto--Ponte dell'Accademia.

Ostregheta! Stranieri consuming pizza on ponte de la Chiesa in S. Croce. Maybe not such a good idea.

Gondolier craftsman at S. Trovaso/Tramontin 'squero' (boatyard) in Dorsoduro. *Reuters were also doing a shoot there at the same time.

as above

as above again

View from Scalzi bridge.

Castello: SM Formosa.

Not everyone in Venice is wealthy. This is the working class residential neighbourhood in lower Castello.

Mask-making made a comeback during the sixties.

Lady Musica.

Venetian plaster art.

Stylish local boatsman.

Venetian shadows.

as above

Giudecca reflections.

San Polo reflections.

Sortoportego e Corte Zambelli in S. Croce.

Waitin' on the vaparetto.

He reads.

She fans.

We are now all of us crossing The Bridge of Sighs. I am done. The end.

I love your photos!

As the daughter of a professional photographer, I can’t take a decent pic to save my life, but I sure do recognize an artist’s eye when I see it.

Thanks for sharing.

Thank you everyone, for saying such nice things. Jayzus this covid. Guessing that we're all feeling much the same way, no? 'Been a long time crossing the Bridge of Sighs'.
Below is a link to the original Robin Trower song of the same name. He channeled the great Jimi Hendrix like nobody else. You may want to read the lyrics, while playing at maximum volume.
I am done. The Sospiri.

'The sun don't shine.
The moon don't move the tides,
to wash me clean.
The sun don't shine.
The moon don't move the tides,
to wash me clean.
Why so unforgiving and why so cold?
Been a long time crossing bridge of sighs.

Cold wind blows.
The Gods look down in anger
on this poor child.
Cold wind blows.
And Gods look down in anger
on this poor child.
Why so unforgiving and why so cold?

Been a long time crossing bridge of sighs.

Miss the canals.
Miss the light.
Miss the gondola rides
departing at midnight.'

I am done. The lyrics.

Really stunning shots, zebec. LOL, my DH always noted that 'Do Not' signs were so often in English! Loved the reflections.

So perfect that Bridge of Sighs has been running thru my head for days

in days of thunder and light our synapses collide.

OK, so I made up the lyrics in that final verse above. Who knows what is being spoken during the obscured talking towards the end?

'Miss the canals.
Miss the light.
Miss gondola rides
departing at midnight.'

I am done. The ponte.

Gorgeous shots, zebec. How can one feel homesick for a place where one has never lived?
