Now if Spain would only ban animal abuse in bull fights then I would say they have joined the ranks of civilized countries.

More ill informed smoker bashing. I do not think the authors would argue with me that smoking over the last 60 years smoking has more than halved (UK 1948 66% of the population, 2009 22.5%) but asthma has risen by 300% (again in the UK). So smoking is not the primary cause of asthma and atopy, I assume the doctor’s cars and industrial pollution. The inconvenient truth is that the only studies of children of smokers suggest it is PROTECTIVE in contracting atopy in the first place. The New Zealand study says by a staggering factor of 82%.

“Participants with atopic parents were also less likely to have positive SPTs between ages 13 and 32 years if they smoked themselves (OR=0.18), and this reduction in risk remained significant after adjusting for confounders.

The authors write: “We found that children who were exposed to parental smoking and those who took up cigarette smoking themselves had a lower incidence of atopy to a range of common inhaled allergens.
“These associations were found only in those with a parental history of asthma or hay fever.”

They conclude: Our findings suggest that preventing allergic sensitization is not one of them.”

http://www.medwire-news.md/…/…gic_sensitization...

This is a Swedish study.

“Children of mothers who smoked at least 15 cigarettes a day tended to have lower odds for suffering from allergic rhino-conjunctivitis, allergic asthma, atopic eczema and food allergy, compared to children of mothers who had never smoked (ORs 0.6-0.7)

CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates an association between current exposure to tobacco smoke and a low risk for atopic disorders in smokers themselves and a similar tendency in their children.”

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubm…pubmed/ 11422156

http://www.jacionline.org/article/PI...19549/abstract

In conclusion let’s have a balanced debate and not characterise smokers as race akin to the devil.

There have been 34 studies into lung cancer and exposure to cigarette smoke as a child. 3 suggest a raised risk, nearly four times as many 11 suggest PROTECTION with 20 suggesting no raised or reduced risk. The most famous is the World Health Organization 1998 study which concluded:

"Results: ETS exposure during childhood was not associated with an increased risk of lung cancer (odds ratio [OR] for ever exposure = 0.78; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.64–0.96)."

"Conclusions: Our results indicate no association between childhood exposure to ETS and lung cancer risk."

Mucky, over 3000 pubs have closed in Great britain since the ban,the netherlands just repealed the ban for small bars and the restaraunts and larger venues are openly defying the law there. In greece the rabid EU anti-smokers as part of a greek bailout made sure the greek govmnt passed a total ban.
They even brought in the harvard school of public health to make sure the ban was being put thru by the govmnt.Today there is a ban but no one is complying yet again. The 4th time greece tried it in the last 6 years!!!!

You think the spanish are gonna obey or comply?????

By wednsday this week the headline will be spanish people refuse to comply with the new smoking prohibitions and the govmnt will recind it,guaranteed.......Spain only put the ban in place to get a bailout the same as greece.....The Obama administration just offered up 4 trillion dollars to keep the euro afloat.......The entire system is imploding and they all know it....governments will topple and smoking bans only create an even worse atmosphere for these govmnts to exist in when the citizens decide to strike back!

Which citizens are going to strike back? The 85% who support the smoking ban or the 15% who do not?

Whether harmful or not your freedome to smoke ends at my nostrils - in any public place and that you are haughty enough to insist on me, in a public place, also inhaling your smoke is repulsive and says a lot about 'thinking only of myself and damn the others' mentality your and your ilk present.

It is still authorized for trolls to smoke under the bridge, and for that certain people should be thankful.

Once again:
Three questions.
1.So let me understand your message. Are you telling me that passive smoking is good for one's health?

2. Tobacco is probably one of the biggest tax revenue generators for government (particularly here in the UK.)
Why would any government want tobacco prohibition that would quite obviously cut their tax revenue?

3. How many cigarettes do you smoke a day?

Three questions, very simple answers please.

"Mucky, over 3000 pubs have closed in Great britain since the ban"

The pubs are closing for a vast number of reasons. I actually spend more time in the pub now than before the smoking ban and the smokers are quite happy to be sat in their little smoking shelter. The real reason for pubs closing is the high cost of beer tax to consumers v supermarkets.

I haven't seen any JD Wetherspoons pubs closing down despite the smoking ban. In fact they manage their beer costs very well and have actually grown.

I'm waiting for the answers to my 3 simple questions please.

Muck

Hi Josele, Thank you I am aware that Canaries are administered by Spain. But not all the Spanish legislative stuff makes it to the Canaries. This is because there are 17 Autonomous communities in Spain, each with certain law making powers devolved.

Guess I'll find out in Lanzarote in March

At least you had the choice, owners could permit or not smoking in their premises, and you could choose going in those places or not. That law did not come out as they expected, as 95% bars and small restaurants decided to permit smoking. So they've moved ahead. Next, they'll ban smoking in the open, or in your own home. And they'll put a telescreen in your wall to make sure you dont. Does this ring any bell?
They are already checking your garbage to make sure you recycle (and big fine if you dont).

Hi Mucky,
not a place administered by Spain; A part of Spain, same as Toledo or Ceuta and Melilla.
