train travel times in Italy
How long will it take to take the train from Rome to Venice and then from Venice to Florence? Would like to know the travelling time and how long it will take to get to the train station from the centre of the city. How long should we get there before departure (assuming we have reservations)? Are there any security checks to go through? Thx.

Hi richard,
Train schedules are at http://www.trenitalia.com/en/.
You can see an interactive map of each city at www.multimap.com.
The Rome and Florence train stations are close to the city center. The Venice station is up near the top of the Grand Canal.
If you get to the station about 1/2 hr before the train leaves, you will not be rushed.
There are no security checks.

If the English version of Trenitalia isn't working, and it wasn't again for me this morning, go to www.reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en
I bookmark this and use it freely for train schedules all over Europe. Although you can't usually get prices, it's a lot easier to use and also will work for trains between countries.

The distance between Venice and Florence is about three hours. As Patrick said, the station in Venice is near the beginning of the Grand Canal. In Florence, the train station in practically in the city center, about a ten minute walk from the Duomo.
