Tuscany - Where should I stay?

I will be in Tuscany for 6 days in May 2005. Three days in Siena touring the Chianti regions and 3 days in southern Tuscany. I will have a car.

Would like suggestions as to whether I would like Pienza as my 3-day base or Montalcino. Have a hotel in either place. Plan to drive around the whole area. Everything seems within easy reach of either place. Which place would be a better choice after the day is over and we are back at our hotel for nice restaurants, evening walks, etc.

Pienza is better situated for day trips, easier to drive in and out of, and has better parking. It is also a nicer town in my opinion.

Hello gals, You do realize that both are within :40 of Siena. But, south Tuscany is my fav, so why not. There is a great 3rd option--San Quirico is halfway between and lovely. Look at this hotel that you will like:
www.palazzodelcapitano.com In town and has a great trattoria a block up the street owned by the same guy, Roberto.

Having just come back from southern Tuscany, my vote would be for Montepulciano -- but that was not one of your choices. All those other places mentioned are great for a day trip, but Montepulciano is great for spending 3 days on its own.

Agree with Bob and Bud,
So. Tuscany is my fav as well. Check out Pitigliano for a day trip. Yes San Quirico is a good base. Have a great trip.

Thanks to everyone for you reply. Sounds like I can't go wrong with either choice.
