ann I know the tickets are amazing! They are reasonable "points" as well - 100,000 a ticket. Others were around 150,000 - 200,000 for business class seats.
Peter - wow! How wonderful - 60 days I was not sure - I have read mixed reviews about how much time to spend in Venice. I am more of a "slow traveler" we spent 10 nights in Paris over Christmas and NYE of 2009 and it was not enough for me. I have only been to Florence and Rome in Italy.

We were in Venice early this past January and it was cold- the dampness made it feel even colder. Burano was coldest of all. Two sweaters, a down vest and a windbreaker was about right. DW added long johns to the outfit.
We were there four nights and there was no rain or flooding during our stay. Some of the coldest places were in unheated indoort sites such as the Doge's Palace, where the stone floors seemed to suck the heat right out of you. Having said all that, we had a great time - no lines for anything and hotel prices were at their lowest. Just dress for cold weather and you will be fine

MomDD - You may want to click on my name and read my trip report for our January trip for more detail - we visited Verona, Venice, Bologna and Rome. Bologna and Rome seemed almost balmy compared to the first two. We have also been to southern Italy including Sicily several times in the winter and it was a wonderful time to visit.

Basinstoke2 - do you have trip reports from Sicily - I will check and see. Dh hails from there and I know he would love to go there as well. I have not been able to get as good of FF tickets to Rome during the time we have to travel.

Thank you all so much for the great feedback. Dh and I talked and we have decided not to go to Italy this December. He really wanted to go but in thinking more about it I would rather save the miles and be able to take a longer trip during a different time. I really want to go to Southern Italy in June/July of 2012 after I graduate from Nursing school and would like to be able to use our miles for that. I hope it works out.
Thank you all SO much for the feedback. We are going to go to Palm Desert to the Marriott for a week over the Christmas break. We have our timeshare and it a short drive, and very relaxing. Different vacation for sure but will be lovely non-the-less.
Thank you again!

MomDDTravel- About Sicily, no, I did not do a trip report. I went with DD a year or two before I discovered Fodor's.
We were only there for 3 1/2 days in late December. We arrived on a military flight (Space A) and stayed at the Navy base. Arriving in the late afternoon, I picked up a rental car on the base, got settled and went into the nearby town for dinner that turned out to be an excellent pizza. The next day was gloriously sunny and we spent the entire day in Taormina, a town that is a true delight. DD was thrilled having her first capucino in Italy on a terrace with a view of the valley. Dinner was in Taormina as well.
The next day, also warm and sunny, we drove out to see the temples at Agrigento. We were amazed by the state of preservation - it was the highlight of the trip. We spent the day there and on the way back saw a town (don't recall the name) at the crown of a high hill, so drove up just to see what it was about. It was after dark when we got up there so we found a restaurant and had dinner. It was good, but nothing really special.
Day 3 we went to see if we could go up to Mt. Aetna. We did a driving tour of Catania on the way. Frankly, Catania did not look like a place I would want to stay. We were able to get pretty far up the mountain and picked up a few items at a gift shop there.
Coming back the weather turned to a hard rain. I checked at the Navy base flight weather station and learned that the rain would be constant for at least the next 3 days. Luckily, there was a C 130 leaving for the Navy base in Rota Spain that evening, even luckier they were willing to take us as passengers, luckier still, the weather report for Spain was great. So, we bid farewell to Sicily and that night we arrived in Spain for the next five days. Love those military flight opportunities!

Thank you Basingstoke. We did decide to go to Palm Desert. We will go to the spa and relax there - not Venice (obviously) but they do have sweet boat rides at the Marriott LOL - Venice will hopefully still be there.
