Venice transport from airport etc

My wife and I fly into Marco Polo airport next Wednesday afternoon and depart on the Friday afternoon. A very short unplanned first trip but we couldn't resist the £1 airfares.

I have printed off the transport map from Actv's website but could not find all the other info I wanted. Did find it somewhere else but cannot remember where.

Would appreciate some advice on:

- Route from Marco Polo to our B&B near San Toma vaparetto stop. I think there might be a cheap ferry to San Marco.

- Route back. Vaparetto to Burano and then a boat from there?

- Although we will probably go around on foot most of the time might it still be worth us getting a 1,2 or 3 day pass? If so, can you pick them up at the airport.

Grazie
Rick

In case you didn't get Absurd's drift, there are 2 ways (besides a water taxi which is fastest & easiest but about 80 euros) to travel from the airport. What most would do is take the Alilaguna waterbus (www.alilaguna.it/)for 10 euros each. On the website you'll see there are 2 lines, red & blue. There is a booth in the airport as you're walking out to buy the tickets. Tell the ticket seller you're going to S. Toma & he will tell you which stop. I think it would be San Zaccaria & I THINK both lines stop there. Then you would transfer to a vaparetto (local water bus), 1 and 82 both go to S Toma. I think you'll have to buy the vaparetto tickets at San Zaccaria (but you can ask at the airport).
As to your return, the Alilaguna doesn't stop at Burano, only Murano. You could take a vaparetto from Burano to Murano & then transfer to the Alilaguna. What will you do with your luggage though? Even a small carry-on will be a pain walking around.
As to the vaparetto pass, decide how many trips you'll make & then decide. I think there is no 2 day option, only per trip, l or 3 days. (days are actually hours so if you buy in the afternoon it's good for 24 hrs from purchase.)
The other way Absurd was suggesting was by bus (on land) which is cheaper. It takes you to Piazza Roma. From there you can also get a vaparetto to s. Toma (still 1 or 82). I have no personal experience with this & people don't mention it here much.

Very helpful replies thank you.
I have had a look at the Alilugana site and there is an option of catching the blue line to Fondamente Nova and then walking to San Toma.
With our brief trip we might only take a backpack for our packing.

That is quite a walk Rickus. You could also get out out at F Nuove & head for the Ca D'Oro stop & take the vaparetto from there to S. Toma. It always amazed me how fast the vaparetto got from stop to stop vs walking the same distance on foot among the twisting, turning "streets". Also keep in mind you will be crossing over bridges.
Whatever you decide, have a superb trip. You will adore Venice.

Thanks mclaurie - will check the street map carefully.

Off topic
I see you have also replied to my New York questions on another thread. We are being greedy this year and have another holiday in the summer, going via the Italian Lakes into Austria - can you help on that one as well?
If you want any tips yourself about Devon or Cornwall in England then I might be your man!
Rick
Oh my, I had not made the connection. I will post on the US board a follow up. Unfortunately I can't help on your summer trip but I'm sure many other Fodorites can.
As to your kind offer on Devon & Cornwall I look forward to some future visit there. My husband is English (London & Surrey) so our UK trips revolve around visiting family. We actually have friends who have an Inn in North Devon (the Millslade Country House Hotel-Brendon, near Lynton) that we hope to visit at some point. Do you know it?
Again, enjoy Venice.

Still off topic for mclaurie:

We live in Exmouth, East Devon. There's some good countryside up near Lynton, although I don't get up to North Devon often. East Devon is pretty good, we now have a World Heritage area starting with the coastline in Exmouth and running through to Dorset. My favoutite part of Devon is actually South Devon - partly because we had a family holiday there in 1959 which I am just about old enough to remember, an epic journey from London in those days - but I have also go to know it a bit better in the last few years as we have friends (more Londoners) who live out in the sticks.

However my favourite part of the South West is West Penwith, the area of Cornwall from Penzance thru to Lands End. I spent five summer working in a holiday place there in the 70s - the fondest memories of my life and some of the countryside there makes you feel like you have gone back a thousand years.

Country Life magazine has just assessed the quality of life in each county of England. Devon came top with 72/100 a huge 8 points ahead of second place Gloucestershire. I think Cornwall was third or fourth.

Rick

Rick- My husband says his favorite area is the same as yours. He took holidays with friends for a number of years renting a farmhouse up the hill from La Morna Cove and Mousehole. He asks if the crab factory is still there.

BTW, so we don't bore the rest of the board, you can email me at
[email protected]
