vienna in Autumn/Winter
I would like to go to Vienna in October or November. I have checked around all the local travel agents and they rather sniffily have said "Oh no! you are out of season." Surely Vienna is not dead between October and November???????

i love vienna in the winter.
so many museums to visit anyway. of course you miss the flowers.. but seeing the monuments surrounded by snow, if you have it, is absolutely gorgeous.

if you like dance and opera, they have standing room tickets for about $3.. which when you get tired, or don´t like it.. you can leave and not feel guilty.

they are called "stehplatz".
get the more expensive one if it is available. and take a scarf to reserve your "space" so you can tour the building and get a coffee before the event adn still have your place when you conme back.
unusual custom difficult to understand for first-timers, but so logical, and sensible!

just to see the stage sets is worth going there.

enjoy your trip.

we ususally do important trips in winter. no crowds. great rates, and a nice break.
moscow in february.
valentine´s day at top restaurant looking across at red´s square all snowed in.
we were very lucky.

but obviuosly, there are important things you do not see in fall or winter.. but it is all valid.

I am going to Vienna in October...that is certainly not winter! Fall only begins in late September! From what I have read (and checked on various weather sites), October is a beautiful time of year. Mean temp in Vienna is 51 degrees F according to weather.com. Cooler than home (New Orleans), but almost everywhere is!! I would drop any TA who has that attitude!

I've been to Vienna in May and twice in December. Although I liked being there in May better, because of being able to sit outside at the cafes, the warm weather, and the beautiful flowers, there is something special about being there in the winter, especially if it snows. The Hofburg looks so beautiful at night with the snow falling on it.

Also, I remember walking out of a concert at the Schonburn Palace and it had just started snowing. There was a big Christmas tree in front of the palace decorated with white lights and it felt like we were in a winter wonder land.

I doubt that you would have snow in October but maybe November.

Anyway, in my opinion, you can't go wrong with Vienna in any season. There is always plenty to do and see.
