Vienna State Opera ..last minute tickets cheaper/10E standing?
Looking at tickets online and the only available are the very expensive or 10E. If we show up at performance time do they discount the very expensive if available and are the 10E
for standing room only? Thanks.

The 10 EUR tickets are not standing room; they are seats with a restricted view of the stage. I am not sure this is still the case, but formerly, unsold tickets were only available at a discount to those with a student ID.

i have been to the vienna opera house several times and always got standing room which is sold about an hour or so before the event.
i do not believe they discount any other tickets at last minute, at least no one explained that to me when i was there.
there are two prices for standing room..(steh platz). the main floor,in the back with a bronze bar to lean on dividing the numerous reserved rows.( it is very civilized and organized BTW) and it is a bit cheaper upstairs.
when you arrive, get your ticket and then go find where you want to be in the designated areas.
you tie a scarf for your "space" and go away and come back a few minutes before the show.
everyone (except the uninformed tourists) respect this space you have "saved" with your scarf.
standing room is a bit tough on the weary traveller, but , it is sooooo cheap, ( same price as coffee three years ago) that if you do not enjoy the opera, or are happy with only seeing an act or two.. it is perfect.
i have never left early although my feet would have liked to.
hope you enjoy it.

There are last minute tickets, but I don't remember the specific details. I do know they are available the day before (unsold seats) and I believe they are approx. $30 (euro?). When I went in January, there were none available, but while I was inquiring, tickets were returned; I had to pay cash, but they were so worth it. We sat in the upper level seats and was able to see fine. It was my first opera - what a thrill to see it in Vienna; can't wait to go back.
Maybe someone else knows of how to obtain last minute tickets. I did so much research on my trip - I either got the info from here, a travel book or the opera website itself.
Good luck.

State Opera standing room tickets go on sale atthe box office 80 minutes before the performance. The line for these tickets often stars to form hours before a good performance.
If tickets are still available as last minute tickets- they must be purchased the day before the performance at the ticket offices.Flat rate of 30 euros.
Information on availability can be obtained by calling (43-1) 514442950
No other last minute purchases that I know of other than visiting a ticket agency and paying a premium for the tickets.

If you're going for the day before the performance discount (which is well worth it, you can get top price tickets for the flat rate if they're available) it's a good plan to queue half an hour or so before the box office opens to get the best seats.(Last time I did it the queue was indoors and there were even chairs, but the box office has subsequently moved so I don't know if that's still the case).
Be aware that this discount is ONLY available the day before - on the day of the performance the prices go back to normal.
Enjoy it!
