I am planning a trip to spain in mid to late Jan, can you suggest the best
area(town) to stay around the Mediterranean that would have warmer temperatures?

The entire southern coast of Spain is fairly similar in warmth - comfy for golf or tennis - but NOT beach weather.

And it wil be quite a bit warmer than northern europe - but there really isn't anyplace in europe that is beach weather in Jan - for that you need to go to the Carib or Asia.

warmer than what? As nytraveler says, southern Spain will be warmer than northern Europe, but not warm in a "beach holiday" way . . . .

Southern Spain or Portugal is as warm as you are going to get in Europe ( warmer than Greece,Croatia or Turkey etc).

I actually have seen people swim in the winter here, but it is true, it is not normally tropical beach weather tho I saw tourists wear shorts all winter long last year.

Look at the different micro climates even in Andalusia on the coast, some places will be warmer and have less rain. When friends of ours who live only an hour away in Malaga had rain all one day, we had none.

January is a tricky month and often one of the coldest. You could luck out with fantastic weather and even be able to sun at the beach. ( Most of the winter one can sun here on a deck or at the beach, but the water is too cold for me).

You could also run into some cold or rain, especially if you are here for a short visit. Over all though, the winter here is better than most of California coast where it is also quite nice.We never wore more than a sweater last year and mostly after the sun went down or early morning.

Historically (and this no way gurantees what happens in 2008, 2009 etc), the mildest, the sunniest and driest winter on Spanish mainland is in the South East corner, roughly from Almeria, Murcia to Alicante. You find a large number of Northern Europeans wintering there on semi-permanent basis, and there're plenty of things going on to cater for their needs.

The further south, the hotter. As already said, not beach weather but plenty to do nevertheless. If you want beach weather you have to go further away to the Canary Islands.

Even though it's slightly north, Seville should be a little warmer (and not windy) than the actual southern coastline. How long is the trip?

Heres my delema
What I would like to do is fly from Calgary Alberta to Spain, and visit Barcelona and Morocco and stay somewhere on the coast in between (Malaga)I only have 12 days and want to go Mid Jan. Do I have enough time? And is there a huge distance between these destinations? And if we travel off season wouldn't it be a bit cheaper??

Thanks for the extra info. I would say your issue is time - not money.

You can get a 2 hr nonstop round flight from Barcelona to Casablana on Royal Air Maroc pretty much any time in January for $200.

Fly into and out of Barcelona from the USA.

I would then spend your "coast time" in Casablaca, Morocco and your "inland" time in Barcelona.

12 days is just enough time for these two locations.

You can fly to Barcelona, spend 5 days, then fly Vueling ( cheap flights in Spain) to Malaga or Seville.

Don't know much about Morocco.
