What has happened to the Globe in London?
My daughter H and I thought it would be fun to go opening night Thursday to see the Globe production of A Midsummer Night's Dream. Too early for reviews, and a couple of other plays we wanted to see had been sold out. The only other time I had been there was 15 or so years ago, and we loved the Comedy of Errors we saw then.
I did have misgivings when I saw that the artistic director had been given the juicy role of Puck. Major red flag. By the time I read that, it was almost the day, our last evening,, so of course we went anyway.
Beautiful building, sold out, packed groundlings even in the rain, same beautiful stage. But then the play started: what I would consider a pretty good high school production, where the director had to use everyone who signed up for drama class.
