We had a fine, no hassle experience with auto Europe. Whatever you use make sure they give you their version of an eazypass transponder as it will total the tolls for you as you go rather than having to stop in each town to pay.

I'm a big AutoEurope fan, too, but just to be clear, it's not a car rental company, it's a broker. It will find you the best deal possible wherever you rent, and that could be Sixt, or Europcar, or Hertz, or Avis, or.....

I just rented via Rentalcars and go with Kiddy, in a location in center of Lisbon.
I prefer Rentalcars than Autoeurope simply because they give quotes in € not in $. And they have a good aftersales services.
Otherwise, I usually rent with Sixt, Europcar, Avis or Hertz. Never really had an issue.

AutoEurope is fine and reputable, but just to add some unrequested information, car rental costs in Portugal are crazy expensive right now, no matter who you rent through. We will be renting an intermediate sized vehicle for 6 days in September, and the best price we could get was $790 US! I have been checking rates regularly, and everything seems to be in that range.
Well, at least the food is cheap there!

The category we rented is Intermediate van - which is the same as we rented in the UK for 10 days last year at about $650 US, and much cheaper prior years in Germany and France. I just check AutoEurope's pricing again for this class and our dates - a little less than before, but not much at $725.

we always use kemwel. have probably used them 9 or 10 times throughout europe.
i love that they offer a reasonable zero deductible policy. i love that they will beat whatever price you can find. i always call them to make the reservation (after researching online) and they are super helpful about helping me figure out which rental spot is closest to our train/hotel/etc. they use various major car agencies depending on the best deals.
they have never pulled anything funny. for our recent trip, i noticed a couple of weeks before the trip that they were showing lower rates for both of our rentals (one in france and one in italy). i called them, and they quickly refunded the difference. we are real fans.
