What to wear in Florence in September

We were just in Florence a week ago (early May) and I formed the opinion that Italians dress for cold weather, all the time. It was cool - but got a little warmer. We spent 2 weeks in Italy (Venice, Siena, Florence, Rome, and Sorrento) and I could have left all but one pair of shorts at home. I could have had a warmer jacket, too. But the Italians all seemed comfortable with what I thought was unseasonably cool weather. I don't think they wear shorts, and black is definitely part of everyone's wardrobe. The women all wore pants (black), with some sort of jacket or blazer -- and a scarf. Bring more sweaters or sweatshirts and long pants than you think you should. And an umbrella. The crowds should be at the same level as we experienced -- not bad, but I think there are always lots of tour buses around. Plan to stand in line for at least an hour at the Uffizi Gallery. One of my favorites was the Pitti Palace, and the Boboli Gardens. The Pitti has several "specialized" museums (carriages, costumes, etc) that I really didn't know about, or I would have planned to spend more time there. The main museum is superb, too. Walk a lot, visit all the churches and museums, eat well (great food!) and you can still do it all on $50 a day pp (plus hotel). Have a great trip. Stay warm.
