Where for New Year's Eve 2006?

Hello-

I know this is a ways off, but I'm obsessive compulsive, so please bear with me.

As part graduation (grad school) and Christmas present, my wife and I have decided to travel to Europe the week after Christmas culminating in a New Year's Eve celebration in our city of choice.

Here is what we are looking for:

1 - A wild party atmosphere on New Year's Eve.
2 - A location with enough to see and do (inside the city or relatively close day trips) for approximately 4/5 days before New Year's Eve.

Here is some more information. I will be 32 and my wife will be 27. We will be traveling with a similarly aged couple. We can fly out of either New York, Newark, or Philadelphia, and our budget is about $3,000 total (per couple). We would prefer to stay 5 nights (with 2 travel days), but we can shorten/lengthen our stay based on the cost of airfare. We don't mind frigid temperatures, and would entertain the possiblity of a multi-city trip.

So, do you have any suggestions? Do you require additional information? Any help provided is most appreciated.

Thanks,
Steve

Edinburgh!<?B> Fits your criteria in spades. I'd just go to Edinburgh myself - maybe rent a car for one day and go to St Andrews or somewhere else. But daylight hours will be very short so you might not want to go too far on any day trips.

If you wanted to squeeze in 2 cities, I'd fly into London around the 28th, stay 2 nights and then fly up to Edinburgh for the rest of your trip.

Open jaw into London and out of Edinburgh or Glasgow would make this easier.

Not trying to talk you into doing two cities - just explaining how you could make it work.

Another vote for Edinburgh. Especially if you want a party atmosphere and don't mind the cold.
And Continental fly there direct from Newark.

Yes, save another couple of grand and come to Sydney. It has the best New Years Eve fireworks display in the world and certainly knows how to party!

lol, DownUnder, I'd love to, but, with a trip to Spain this Spring, a beach vacation in August, and a trip to Italy planned in Spring of '07, our travel budget's already stretched pretty thin.
