The Grassmarket Hotel is more of a young people's hostel and I think it would be noisy & full of stag/hen parties - I often pass by & see them hanging about outside.
If you let us know your accommodation budget we should be able to suggest somewhere nicer. Maybe you need to book your flight first, in order to determine your accommodation budget ?
When in summer ? You probably already know this, but the city is very busy in August due to all the festivals; accommodation is generally more expensive and gets booked early. But if you are the sort of person to appreciate the festivals it's the best and most exciting time to be here (my view). www.edinburghfestivals.com points you towards all the festivals. The International Festival tickets are the first to go on sale, in March. Oh, and the Tattoo tickets go on sale in December and sell out quickly.

Looks like you've picked Edinburgh - great choice. My husband and I moved here almost 2 years ago and love it here. I agree with Caroline about the Grassmarket. Getting to and from the airport to Edinburgh is extremely easy, there is a bus straight to Princes Street and a taxi isn't too expensive if you'd prefer.

First, Dublin is about being in your 20's and drinking for 12 hours a day. An hour's sightseeing. thats about it. Nice people. Better places to go in the world.
Edinburgh is at least 7 days and the rest if the budget stands up. If you are in Edinburgh during University holidays, July - October, try the Uni Halls, really good quality, single rooms ensuite, central and great value. Book early for August Festival visit

Another benefit to Edinburgh is that you can take a train (about 45 minutes) to Glasgow where there are a number of interesting sights like Charles Rennie Mackintosh buildings (great tour at Glasgow School of Art) and the Necropolis cemetery. Trains run very frequently and you can go from city center to city center.
