Where should we go in England
Ok we've travelled to many countries in Europe and have done London . Now we'd like to visit other parts of England. Which area is the most beaufitul? We'd like a relaxing vacation with nice villages, good pubs, and a few historical sites thrown in. What's your favorites.

Now granted, I've only been to England once...and we didn't have that much time-we made it to the cotswolds and thereabouts (salisbury, winchester...) and to York which was is now my favorite place in the world-we loved it! So much history-great pubs, the cathedral is indesribable...anyway, do a search on York and see what you find. Heres a site to some pics-

http://www.freefoto.com/regional/europe/united_kingdom/england/yorkshire/york/index.asp

we also have our pictures up on www.panteravb.com of all of our England/N. Wales trip. Hope that helps!

There are many beautiful parts of England - one area ofter overlooked is the Welsh Marches the border area between England and Wales. You could start at Chepstow (about 2-3 hours from London) famous for its castle, work your way the Wye Valley then on to Hay-on-Wye (bookshops!). Then Leominster and Ludlow, two georgeous Market Towns. Further west you could visit Welsh Towns such as Presteigne (excellent museum of the Judges Lodging and Courthouse) or English Border towns such as Clun and Bishop's Castle (both have castles and ancient churches). You could then explore the Welsh Hills or the Shropshire Hills. Visit Shrewsbury (one of Britain's best preserved Medieval towns - its on a loop in the River Severn). From there you could then go on to Chester (the other contender for best preserved medieval architechture).

The Marches has some the most unspoilt countyside in England, has lots of history and could provide plenty of entertainment for a two week holiday.

Yorkshire Dales. Beautiful scenery, lovely villages, fantastic pubs. I know I used to live there. In fact its so nice I am wondering why I ever moved to London
.. Chose a centre like Skipton and you can tour the many dales each day, with an extended visit to the Lake district (60miles from Skipton) or to York.

The Lake District is my "hands down" favorite part of England. I like the drive from Cartmel into Coniston from the south, the drive between Windemere to Ullswater and on to Keswick, the drive around Buttermere and over Scafell (sp?) Pike.

Im new to this forum, but Im surprised how infrequently I see references to the Lakes. Comments? Gareth?

We had 3 weeks in England, spent the middle week on a classic tourist loop -- through Oxford and Cotswolds, spent 2 nights in Stratford-upon-Avon, went to Warwick Castle, on west to Hay-on-Wye (2 nights in book lovers heaven) then south thru the Brecon Beacons and Cardiff to 2 nights in Bath, past Salisbury and Stonehenge on the way back to London. So this worked out to 4 days with a couple of hours of driving, 3 days with little or none.

The Burgoyne Hotel in Reeth near Richmond. From there you can visit the Yorkshire Dales, York, Durham and Hadrian's Wall as well as stay in one of the most charming hotels we've ever discovered anywhere. Be sure to drive into Richmond to see the old theatre. Eat at the hotel---perfect. The town will win your heart.

Steve. There is the occasional reference to the lakes on this forum. I myself, while living in London do try to promote the North of England when I can. I think that more and more people on this forum do like to see more than just the Southeast. It is up to us to continue to suggest a visit north of the Watford gap!

You will love the Peak District National Park in Derbyshire. It's the range of hills in the middle of the country. We call it "the Backbone of England". It's very beautiful - rugged and wild, with wonderful drystone walls separating the fields.
Try accessing >>www.peakdistrict.org<<
