Would like some opinions on this. Taking the train from Prague back to Munich the day before our flight home. Originally thought it would be easier to stay close to the airport, however I now think it would more convenient and easier to stay in Munich close to the train station. The flight home is at noon so we'd have plenty of time to get to the airport. Thanks for any advice.

We stayed at the beautiful and rather new LeMeridien right across from the train station, which couldn't be easier, simply roll your luggage across the street.
I don't know when you're going, but we got a fantastic deal way in advance on the LeMeridien website and they also have some great last minute and/or weekend deals. Otherwise it's pretty pricey, but very deluxe.

No need to stay near the train station. Almost any location in the center of town will allow you to use an S Bahn to get to the airport.

Last year we took the S Bahn (midweek) from Munich to the airport, as Michael suggested, and had no problems.
However, on Sundays the S Bahn was closed so you may want to check with a fodorite living in Munich to see if this practice is going on if you are traveling on a weekend.
We paid about 40 euros last year to get from the airport to central Munich by taxi but the price has probably increased.

I've stayed at LeMeridien and it is a very nice hotel and, as Patrick indicated, right across the street from the train station. Sometimes you can get it at a discount on sites such as www.utell.com.

Another possibility, if you don;t mind being in a "chain" property, is the Hilton Munich City (there are two Hiltons) in Haidhausen which sits directly above the S-Bahn station..you don;t even have to go outside the hotel to get to it.

GREAT buffet breakfast, air conditioned (if that's an issue..but so is LeMeridien) and probably cheaper than LeMeridien.

Another possibility would be the Acanthus which is highly recommended on the Karen Brown site...smaller and family-owned near Sendlinger Tor.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions even though I was looking for opinions on whether to stay in Munich or at the airport. Guess I didn't make myself clear. Happens more and more as I age. ;-)

We loved the Hotel Uhland, too. It's in a nice neighborhood, a short walk from the train station, across the street from the Oktoberfest park. Good breakfast buffet, very lovely, well-maintained historic building.

Well, I don't think staying near the U=bahn has any great advantage. The Lufthansa bus is the easiest way to get to the airport. It leaves from the main train station and makes a pickup stop at the Nordfriedhof location.

I took the Lufthansa bus just this past Sunday from Nordfriedhof and there was no problem getting to the airport.

Festival traffic jams were 5 miles long coming into town, and construction in the outbound lanes had that traffic snarled. So the bus detoured and still got us there in less than 40 minutes.

If you go with the S bahn, you have to wrestle luggage up and down the escalators and stairs. With the bus, bags are locked under the bus in the baggage area and only the driver has the key.

The bus stops at Terminal 1 and 2 when it gets to the airport.

I have used the both Lufthansa bus and the S Bahn to get to the Munich airport, and I will not use the S Bahn again because I find the bus easier to ride and much easier if you have large luggage to handle.

I wish we'd known about the Lufthansas bus ourselves! We took a cab from the Hotel Uhland, because our family of four had way too much luggage. The cab cost almost $100 USD. Good thing we had saved money elsewhere!

I think it depends on at which time you arrive the day prior to your departure. If you can still make use of that day (and e it just for dining in town), you'd be better off staying in town than at the airport.

I think the suggestion of the new Le Meridien hotel is spot on (Patrick's and TopMan's advice usually is very good) and it would be my first choice to stay when in Munich. I have had a look at the hotel and it is very nice indeed. Plus, it sports a pool in contrast to the City Hilton), and its location across from Central station is very convenient in order to get you to the airport the next day. You will also be reasonably close to the main pedestrian area right in the center of town (walkable distance).

The Lufthansa bus leaving from the opposite entrance of the station is indeed very convenient and is only slightly more expensive (around € 1.-, total of around € 9.-) than the S-Bahn.
Do ask your concierge, though, upon leaving the hotel, whether there might be a traffic jam. The airport is quite a long way out of the city and some parts of the trip on the Autobahn are prone to traffic jams. Should the hotel know something about that, take the S-Bahn instead. Travel time on the S- Bahn should be around 50 min.
