Which base city in Algarve Portugal?

We will be visiting Portugal in early June spending 2 nights in Porto, 3 nights in Lisbon then on to Algarve for 3 nights. We want to stay in one city all 3 nights and will probably rent a car to see more of the region. We will be hiking--easy hikes, beaching a bit, kayaking- and exploring the not to miss places--Which city should we stay in to get the most out of 3 days? I've just started researching this and have gotten different answers at every site. I would value the beauty of the city, things to do that don't require too much time on the road---location. Also do you think the nights planned in all 3 areas is appropriate. Will probably fly into Lisbon, take train to Porto first, then backtrack to Lisbon, then to Algarve. Would prefer flying right into Porto but assuming that airline tickets from Chicago will be cheaper in and out of Lisbon. Thank you in advance for your advice.

I'd use the linear train system to get about. I like Faro or Tavira, neither of which are especially touristy but in the old town worth while as a base. With your views Faro makes more sense, but Tavira has an off the coast massive sandbank which has a train on it in summer and the waters between the coast and the sandbank are fantastic in a canoe.

Despite holidaying on the Algarve a few times now I prefer the Alentejo, which has fewer golf courses and tour coaches

Hi Viewgirl, we go in May & have a very similar itinerary (& interests) except that we have 3 days in each - Porto, Lisbon & in the Algarve which we might extend by a night. Have been struggling with where to stay as well, In the Algarve, I liked the Praia da Rocha area, was looking at the Hotel Oriental or the Hotel Algarve Casino (though not sure how I feel about staying at a casino hotel!) Also like the Tivoli Carvoeiro Resort. Have you looked at any of these?

I have seen several recommendations for Faro on Fodors so need to look closer to see if that might be a better option. Definitely want to be on the beach & water.

Also trying to decide if we should rent a car in Lisbon & drive there or maybe use public transportation & just rent a car there locally for a day to two. Anybody want to weigh in?

The drive south is super fast on the toll road, which is virtually empty because locals avoid it. The problem with transportation to the Algarve then renting is the business of getting to the car rental place from the train, and hoping they are open (opening hours for agencies can include closed at lunchtime, closing early, and closed on Sundays). If you are flying into Lisbon airport, picking up a car there from one of the established agencies with the cars in the garage next door is a piece of cake. You can then, if it fits, drop the car in the Algarve usually for no extra cost.

Thanks dfourh!
We will be staying in Lisbon prior to that but can always take a cab to the airport/rental car.

Anyone have any names of local car rental agencies they have used, either in the city or at the airport? I made a reservation with Centauro but have subsequently seen many negative reviews so I think I will cancel that. But would love other recommendations.
Thanks!

After many years I've completely given up anything but the majors, particularly Avis & Hertz, but always try to book it through a wholesaler like AutoEurope or Billigermietwagen.de (Priceline is worth a look too), as they might have better prices than if you go to the company website. The reviews are important - - if you read about nickel & diming, and mysterious damages found at return, run away. I've always found Avis and Hertz to be no-nonsense, no funny-business professional outfits.
