Which tram from Vienna to Schonbrunn Palace

Should we take tram #58 to the palace? We are staying near Stephansdom. Also, how long is the tram ride?

There are tram maps in every tram stop.

The palace is in the lower left corner of the map (southwest of city center).

It's approximately a 20 minute ride, and about a 10 minute walk across its front yard (the tram stops right in front of the front yard).

Take the U bahn. Much quicker and direct. Walk or ride from Stephansplatz to Karlsplatz and take U4 to Schönbrunn. Easy to do in my experience; but I find Vienna easy to get navigate.

If you are going to take an audio tour, take the one with the most rooms. Otherwise I think you will feel incomplete.

U1 is one stop from Stephansplatz to Karlsplatz, and U4 is six stops to Schonbrunn. The palace is a short walk from the U-bahn stop.
It shouldn't take much more than 20 minutes total for the whole trip, including the walking.

Yes, Tram #58 is the easiest way to Schönbrunn.

From Stephansdom take the subway U-3 direction Ottakring. 5 stops to the Westbahnhof.Transfer to the #58 at the Westbahnhof station. Watch for the signs. you will find the 58 on the surface , just in front of the Bahnhof( train station) It is the end station for the 58, so it will only go one way.
Entire trip 15- 20 minutes . The 58 tram will let you off in front of Schönbrunn avoiding the walk from the U-bahn station on line U-4.
Save your walk for the Gardens behind the Palace- much more interesting.

Hi Molker,
Thanks for that info. I'm going to do Schonbrunn gardens again if there's snow in Feb. Question re the tram...do you catch the 58 in front of Westbahnhof, right in front of that newstand across the street from the West End Cafe? Or is there another tram stop area?

Hello from cold Vienna! A little snow today too! Perhaps we get more during your visit.

It appears that you know the Westbahnhof area. If you come there via the U-3 - depart the u-bahn and follow signs to U-6( two levels above- most people will be going this way) Take the steps or escalator to the next level above the U-6 which will be ground level. Then look for #58 signs.

Both the #58 and #52 have an end of the line turn- a- round stop at the surface entrance to the U bahn station toward Mariahilferstrasse. The #58 has a short wait here generally and the stop is marked with the usual Vienna signage.

If you stand with you back to the Bahnhof and look across the street it is just to the right. The #6 and #18 also stop in this general area. There are several newstands and food kiosks there.
The 58 also stops on Mariahilf just to the south side of the Bahnhof.
It is about 6 or 7 stops to Schönbrunn.
It is not as complicated as the above description.

Hopefully you can walk in the Gardens.
The side of the Palace facing the gardens is being renovated and is almost finished now. A slightly different color now.
Also look at the numerous plaques that are attached to some of the bench sitting places in the Gardens.
Very interesting " Sayings"

Also the Restaurant at Schönbrunn is surprisingly good. You find it to the left side as you enter the complex.
A good place to " Warm-up". and eat.

Thanks, that's a big help. And hooraay!!! The Meridien got me a reservation at Steirereck so I can check out their new digs. Dinners are now already confirmed for Steierereck, Meinl and Morwald...I think I will eat well on this trip

Be certain to visit a Bankomat before dining at these places. But it is worth it!New
Steirereck has completely different decor than the old location- but same kitchen with variations.
In addition to the restaurant, they also have a cafe for coffee, cake, etc.

If you like Jazz, Cafe Central has different groups every Friday evening in their nice surrounding.
No fee entrance and usual Cafe Central menu.

Thanks to everyone for replying so quickly.

Molker, thank you especially for your specific instructions which are most helpful.

And thanks to BTilke, I also have some ideas now for restaurants, although I think they will be out of my price range.
