aussie needs help re trip

I am in Ba for wedding end of October. So far have the falls,Salta,El Calafate, horse riding , Upsala Glacier ideas from this wonderful site but need some ideas.
With the distance and cost from Australia i would love some input on what is a must in South America. We are prepared to fly to other countries. Our son is in San Francisco so will be coming that way first.
Thanks for your time

It helps to know how much time you have to spend in Argentina/South America.

Dear Jenny: Salta is a great area, I recommed you to take at least three nights there, 4 full days. Salta, the city itself is beautiful, and you have to take sometime for it. Then you have a ciruit to the north visiting the salt flats and the Humahuaca Gorge. and in the south, do not miss Cafayate.
The area of wines, and rock formations. Any other questions about the area???

You must be from Salta and it shows you love your province. But you dont praise Jujuy that much. Dont take me wrong, Salta is a wonderful province and we, B.A. people, know that. Many more people from Buenos Aires make it to Salta every year. All of them come fascinated with the landscape and the people of Salta, they love Cachi, Molinos, Cafayate and Salta.
But, they are also overwhelmed by the beauty of Jujuy. Say sth about Tilcara, Maimara, Purmamarca.

Termas de los Reyes or Termas Reyes is attracting lots of "porteños" now and it is getting high in the ranking of favourite places.
Flinstone, PLEASE be fair to Jujuy, another jewel of our north.

I would not visit the north at all until you have seen a couple of other regions, especially Iguazu and Patagonia (maybe the lakes region of Patagonia). These areas are world class destinations and should not be missed by visitors.

The north would be my third choice, ahead of Mendoza and way ahead of the beaches of Argentina. Just my two cents worth.

many thanks. It looks like south it is as we have only 10 days. I enjoy seeing an area than fly all over the place. I just need to pin point the stop off points and tours.
Thanks again
Jenny

We went to Argentina and the next year Australia and loved both. This is what we did in Argentina: BA, Iguazu Falls, Valdes Peninsula (sealions & penguins) Ushuaia (straits of magellan), Calafate (perito Moreno glacier). We stayed in various Estancias (kind of farmstays with families can be very upmarket)which were marvellous. We drove but also took several flights. Like Australia Argentina is enormous and very varied. I don't think you have time to go to anywhere else. I would definitely do Iguazu, Calafate and Ushuaia. Save the west for another time.

You asked about other countries. You could do a loop Argentina/Chile/Perú/Argentina. If you are flying into Chile first, you could do a bit of Chile, cross to Mendoza in Argentina overland crossing the Andes. If you are coming all that way, it would be a shame to miss Perú. You could fly from Santiago to Lima and then do a flight to Cusco, visit Macchu Picchu. There is just so much to see in SA that it is difficult to name everything, but if you have the time it would be wonderful to see more than one country.
