Best Restaurant in BsAs. A Review
Ok, so best might be an overstatement. Generally, the best restaurant in BS.As. is the one in which I ate my last meal...in other words there are thousands of great restuarants....but here is one that really stands out:
Sucre. Sucre 646 in Belgrano. The Cross street is Libertador. phone 4782-9082.
Sleek, modern restaurant with superb food and wine.
I have eaten here three times in the past two weeks and never had a bad expérience.....
Phone ahead for a reservation....the place is usually packed....reservations held 15 minutes, then cancelled.
The wine steward will help you select an appropriate wine...try the Trapiche Chardonney reserve....excellent, buttery taste 47 pesos and worth every centavo....
Appetizers range from simple green salads to ceviche, to duck to baked mozerella and tomato....all highly recommended....9 to 16 pesos....
Main courses.....lamb chops, white fish prepared in vanilla sauce, pink salmon, and roast suckling pig are all highly recommended....
Desserts...the cheesecake is excellent as is the chocolate volcano....very intense hot chocolate and ice cream ......
Cost about 70 pesos pp, wine and tip included
Off the beaten tourist path....about a 7 peso cab ride from Recoleta...but worth the treip!

Cabana de las lilas is great but overpriced imo....1880 Parilla in the 1600block of Defensa in San TElmo is a great option....half the price of las lilas.....and full of local flavor and character.....El Mirasol is another higher priced option, with some great streaks....There are three branches around town, including one on Posadas not far from the 4 Seasons hotel...La Brigada in San Telmo is another good choice.....I had a fantastic steak last night at a new restaurant in Palermo Viejo, KiCo's on Costa Rica in the 4800 block.....I could go on....it is hard to find a bad steak in Buenos Aires.

We will take our first trip there in August. We are very interested in wine and food and greatly appreciate your comments on wine and food. In addition to beefsteak are there any interesting seafood restaurants and styles of seafood in B.A. ? We enjoy buttery chardonnays with strong influence of malolactic fermentation and good full bodied reds. Any further advice or comments would be greatly appreciated.

I am not a white wine guy, but I did have a great chardonney that fits your description in Sucre.....it has a hang tag rather than a label and is only available in Sucre and a couple of other restaurants....The winery is Trapiche....and it is a reserve....sorry that's all I can remember other than the price was about 45 pesos per bottle....
Full bodied reds come in two stripes in Argentina....Cabs and Malbecs....I am interested in bang-for-your-buck wines.....that is, low price, high quality.....
I can recommend several reds that meet my criteria...all for less than 25 pesos per bottle.....Santa Julia Roble (make sure it says Roble) produces a full bodied Cab and Malbec....Trumpeter (from the La Rural winery) has a reasonably price Cab that is outstanding for the price, as does Terrazas. Finally, try Fabre Montmayour's malbec, cab or chardonney....An excellent winery for the money!
Slightly more expensive, but a great wine for the money is luigi Bosci Cabrenet...about 30 to 35 pesos in wine stores...
You can certainly spend more for wines in Argentina...Ruttini and Zapata wines are world class, and priced accordingly....(I like the Ruttini S. Blanc, which is among the lower price Ruttini offerings at about 40 pesos...)
But imo, the real bargains in Argentina are the types of wines I have described....excellent quality for a very reasonable price.....less than 25 pesos in wine stores for any of the wines I have mentioned.......
About Seafood restaurants....my favorite is Oviedo in Barrio Norte on Beruti...a Spanish restaurant with some very good fish offerings....merluza and corvina as well as the standard salmon rosada....

Cabana Las Lilas may be overpriced compared to other restaurants in Buenos Aires, but to Americans the price is ridiculously paltry. I actually laughed when I was handed my bill at Cabana Las Lilas. A glass of Champagne, two glasses of Carrasal 2000, medallions de lomo w/broccoli aioli , a salad of hearts of palm, pancakes w/ice cream for dessert, and a cappuccino, all came to $33 US!!!! I pay more for a glass of Champagne ($35) at the better restaurants in Manhattan.
I think Cabana Las Lilas is extraordinary.

Your advice is greatly appreciated. I have no doubt we are going to have a very good time there in B.A. I am considering going to the Mendosa region also and will read up on the Region. Thanks again.

Sydney, I spent a long weekend in Mendoza recently and enjoyed the experience very much. The atmosphere and weather are totally different from BsAs....Small town, dry climate....
WE took tours of two wineries, offered by a tour guide who knows wine....her father is a consultant to wineries and she is developing specialized tours of wineries.....Bodega La Rural (Ruttini, San Felipe and Trumpeter wines) and and the winery that produces Santa Julia both offer great tours in English...and the latter has a restaurant that allows you to sample wines with each course....all at a very reasonable price.....
Enjoy....

I Enjoyed my dinner at cabana Las Lilas, lot of details, and a great ambience, though overpriced for a restaurant in BA.
My vote goes to El Mirasol in Recoba area, not as fancier as Las Lilas but far better service and steaks, plates are huge and the quality is excellent. they will suggest you wich cut is your best bet the night you are in. half the price of Las Lilas bill.
Dont go to Hereford in Pto Madero, the place is deserted compared to others, and my steak was so so.
as
Wines? Montchenot 1993, 45 pesos in el Mirasol, one of the best I have ever tasted.
happy hunting

A couple of updates.....
La Cabana has recently reopened ( not to be confused with Cabana las Lilas)....the former is located on Rodriquez Pena in Recoleta and the latter is in Puerto Madero....It is a special place, with special prices....but the food is quite good!
About wines.....Terrazas Gran Cabrenet 99 was recently selected as the best Cab in South America in a book called the 50 best wines of South America.
It retails for 100pesos....Angelica Zapata Chardonney was selected as the best Chardonney in South America, very buttery.......Hope this helps!
Interestingly, the best malbec was from Chile not Argentina....although there were 4 or 5 Argentine Malbecs that were listed among the top 50....some with very low prices! I paid 20 pesos for a bottle of one of the top 5 Malbecs....
For a reliable winery at great prices, try Carmelo Patti or Fabre Montmayou!

I have to say that I do not enjoy Malbec wines, but I had a great time visiting the Mendoza region. We went on an all day trip to about four different bodegas. Obviously one thing to be careful about: make sure that you have some food throughout the day because sampling all the different wines made me quite ill, before my dinner of paella.
