Costa Rica -- would you choose Playa Flamingo or Papagayo?

Our musts: a nice, calm beach; some good local restaurants (not five-star, just tasty); and it would be awesome if there were a cute town within walking distance. Where would you go?

I agree, Flamingo is definitely the best choice. The Papagayo area is spread out. You will not be able to walk to any other restaurants, shops or town area without a backpack and guide!

Flamingo is a pretty cool little town with a few shops and several restaurants. You have to be careful on which hotel you choose, as most are up on the hill. Flamingo Beach Resort is located across the street from the beach.

Cheers

Definitely Flamingo. Nearby Portrero is fun--stop by El Castillo for great bakery and good sandwiches, breakfasts. Do NOT get the all-inclusive plan at Flamingo Beach Resort. FBC is a good choice, though--fabulous pool, large, comfy rooms--sort of Holiday Inn style. Good value.

I'd not use their spa, but instead go across the street to Petite Paris. Caroline gives great massages. Chris is a good hair stylist.

Playa Flamingo is a good central location to visit both Papagayo area (to the north via Monkey Trail out of Portrero) as well as Tamarindo to the south (good shopping, restaurants).

Playa Flamingo is also one of the most beautiful beaches in Costa Rica. Nearby Playa Conchal (drive to it via Playa Brasilito) is a gorgeous shell beach, calm, warm, pretty water great for swimming. In the Portrero area, Playa Penca is nice. This entire area of CR is very built up and developed which turns a lot of people off. However, it does have its strong points!

Best tours: Rincon de la Vieja and Palo Verde

BTW, if you take the Congo Trail out of Portrero toward Playa Hermosa and Playas del Coco--have dinner at Ginger. It is excellent (but closed on Mondays, I think).
