Cozumel/Costa Maya suggestions for daytripping cruisers?

We are taking a cruise in April, with ports-of-call to include Cozumel and "Costa Maya". Not fans of canned cruise excursions, we're thinking of casting out on our own to sample the sights/beaches. Any suggestions for how to make best use of our limited port time in/around these locales? We'd like a relaxing beach/snorkeling day in Cozumel, and a "ruins" day in Costa Maya, ideally both off the beaten path and apart from fellow cruisers....

Lots of great things to do in both places. Start with a search of this site for "Cozumel" - you'll find that your question has been answered by many posters with lots of great recommends.

I am in Cozumel almost every month but am not familiar with "Costa Maya"--maybe Riviera Maya. If so, what is the port for this?
For Cozumel, avoid the cruise ship tours and hire a van from one of the "island tours" guides. Go to the east side of the island to escape the cruise mob--Chen Rio is beautiful with good food.

RobertSDF, Costa Maya apparently refers to the area of the Yucatan south of the Bio-Preserve and the Tulum ruins region. Our port looks to be a newer one, in a small fishing village known as Majahual (also Mahahual).

Go to locogringo.com. Go to monthly spotlight under the flamingos. Click on past spotlights and you will find info on Majahual, Xcalak, and ruins in the area.

Thanks to the reply regarding Costa Maya-have been to that area many times but didn't know this term for it!
