CR - Should we take an organized tour or D.I.Y.?

We are planning a 2-week trip in March '09. Some friends recommend to take a "package tour" (for the guides, and peace of mind), but we usually like to travel on our own.
Any thoughts/recommendations?
Thx

We've always done it on our own and haven't had any problems. I like the freedom of doing our own thing. We got most of our info. right here on this board and found everyone to be incredibly helpful. I'd say it's pretty easy to go it alone. Do you have an idea of what you'd like to do or see? There are volcanoes, cloud forests, beaches, wildlife, ziplines - you'll get a lot of responses from people who have already traveled there.

Thanks for the reply, volcanogirl.
we usually prefer to travel independently, but i feel we would enjoy it more with a guide.
are guides generally available "on the spot" in the touristy places, or should we book in advance?
thx

We have always hired private drivers through our hotels when we book. We've gotten good ones that have acted as a guide of sorts; they drive you to your destination, stop where you want, and narrate along the way. Once we get to our destination, we go on tours like Cano Negro, hiking tours, birding tours, etc. and hire guides through places like Sunset Tours. If you have an idea of where you'd like to go, people will make loads of recommendations for you. We usually book our tours through our hotel once we get there unless it's something like Eco Termales that we know will most likely be sold out.
