We have been asked to send(fax) a copy of our credit card to the travel agent.
It seems most unusual and not at all safe?

I've had to do that for trips to both Costa Rica and Mexico. I never like it either, but haven't had any problems. Jean

This is a typical procedure to protect against credit card fraud. Nobody who stole your number off some kind of electronic exchange is going to be able to produce a photocopy of your card. That will also carry your signature as well as such additional information as the type of holograph on the card, the 3-digit security code on the back, and other design features used to check that a card is not fradulent.

Yep. Quite common, indeed. They are actually protecting you by following this procedure. As mentioned on other threads here, be sure to inform your credit card provider(s) before you depart, that you will be using the card(s) at your destination(s). To prevent any CC declines while traveling.

Totally normal and actually a required process to protect you, the client. I've traveled throughout South America and had to do it several times. Just make sure you are giving it to a reputable company. As long as you are, you have very little to worry about.
