Usually the mid Dec to Christmas season is somewhat sparsely populated by tourists and it is the start of the dry season without daily showers in the afternoon. January is perfect weather but a little more crowded as it is the start of the high season for tourists. I like both Dec and Jan. The dry season lasts through April. Otherwise every afternoon expect an hour or two of showers in most areas.

Christmas thru New Years is extremely busy. I like to go mid January and usually stay for a month. The tourists are starting during that time but it is not terribly busy. March and April are also extremely busy. Early Jan would be a good time. Weather should be pretty good just about everywhere and you would have your choice of hotels.

I was there last year for New Years and it was SO crowded we swore we'd never go at that time again. Well, that didn't hold true for my husband as he is there now and says it's just as crowded and once again says he won't go at that time of year again. So, If it were me, I'd go mid to late January when the Ticos are all back to work and not vacationing.

If you want to keep track of the weather in Costa Rica or elsewhere in Costa Rica, then ...
1.go to msn.com
2. click on weather.
3.click on Central America
4.Click on Costa Rica
5. Finally click places in Costa Rica from the list. eg San Jose, Liberia etc.

Then save this to your Favorites.
Then a week or so before you go, check this Favorite site daily as it will keep giving you the weather for the next 4 days.
For example it was 89F in Liberia today and it will be 89F tomorrow but 90F on Saturday.
As you know Liberia has the other International Airport in Costa Rica.
Hope this helps

The crowds shouldn't be too bad in early January. The weather will be mostly good with an occasional shower in places. Slightly better weather then than in early Dec for some places. The further northwest you go, the less chance of rain.
