Driving from Brownsville, TX to Monterrey, Mexico

Having never been to Mexico before, is there anything I should worry about driving from Brownsville to Monterrey (or perhaps, is there a better entry point from the US)? Is this a dangerous section of the country or should I be fine making the trip in the daytime?

Also, does anyone have any good resources for directions in Mexico? If only Mapquest covered the whole world!

McAllen would be closer. A daytrip is probably fine, BUT I'd check current advisories on State Dept site. Many border areas south of the Rio Grande aren't safe at the moment (like Nuevo Laredo, but not sure of Monterrey) and the State Dept bulletins would probably give you the latest info.
