help with isla mujeres or similar places

Hello,
I'm looking for a little advice on traveling to Mexico, in the Cancun area, this December. I'd like to stay somewhere in this area, but I'm not all that interested in Cancun. My neighbor has recomended isla mujeres. Has anyone been there? His are the prices? Is it safe? Is it hard to get to flying in to Cancun? I've found a lot of stuff on the internet, but I prefer first hand info.

I'm also concidering Cozumel, but I'd like I'd like something a little smaller, less touristy, and hopefully less expensive. My wife an I will be traveling to the area the week before Xmas, 2003. I need to get my flight soon, as we're using Frequent Flier miles.

Also, If anyone has any suggestions on places similar to isla mujeres I'd love to hear them. We love the sun and beaches, but I'm not sure if we want to stay in Cancun. Too busy and touristy.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Jerryp

We have been to Isla Mujeres twice, and enjoyed it thoroughly both times. There is a wide range of accomodations, and a nice town to walk through. Some good beaches, and an OK snorkeling location at El Garrafon (sic). You can get a boat from Cancun, or a bus to Puerto Juarez and then a ferry. Particularly when compared to Cozumel and Cancun, this little island is far less touristy.

We have been to Isla several times and love it. It is very quiet and inexpensive - a barefoot on the beach type of holiday, with no requirement to "dress up" ever. There is one spectacular beach, Playa Norte (in town) and lots of other smaller beaches. You get there by taking transportation from the airport to Puerto Juarez and getting the ferry over (the ferry takes about 20 minutes and runs every half hour throughout the day). We have stayed in town and at the south end of the island and have walked miles and taken cabs and have never felt unsafe. For lots of information check out www.isla-mujeres.net, which has a message board, accommodation, etc. If you have specific questions, I would be happy to try to answer them.
Thanks to all for the replies, they're greatly appreciated.

The other place I've found that sounds kind of interesting in Puerto Morelos. It sounds pretty quit, yet close to both PDC and Cancun. Does anyone have any advice on this place? Is it safe? It looks pretty nice from the websites I've found.

Thanks again for any more responses.

Jerry

Jerry - I'm getting ready to post a big review about Chalet Maya (30 min. north of Cancun), but it's something you might want to check out, even if for a few nights (think total escape, serenity, relaxation): www.cancunbungalows.com You can still take advantage of the many attractions in the area while enjoying total seclusion in a private, rural setting. It's so great!

I have a friend going to Puerto Morelos later this month, and she's staying here: www.ceibadelmar.com Looks a bit pricey but nice.

Please email with any questions about Chalet Maya! We were so very happy with our time there.

If this is your first time to Mexico I would recommend IM over PM.
We have a 26 page home grown brochure on IM and surrounding areas. Would be glad to e-mail it out to you if you request. [email protected]

My family of 4 stayed in Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Isla Mujeres about 5 years ago. Our favorite place was Hotel NaBalam on IM. There are only about 31 rooms. Stay in the rooms on the beach side of the road (dirt/sand road). Food was reasonable at the hotel beach bar. Plus there are many other places in town. You can take a 20 min jet boat ride back to Cancun for shopping and/or nightlife. We will probably be going again next February. We are considering splitting our time between Cozumel (never been) and NaBalam. www.nabalam.com

Just back from a 2-week trip to the Cancun area. I think we'll look into Porto Morelos next time, it is a charming little town and not touristy at all.

We also liked Isla Mujeres and we'd like to go back there.

Have fun!
