Hi all,

I am in the beginning stages of planning a 12 day trip to Argentina for late December / early January. My girlfriend and I are traveling with another couple, all of us in our mid to late 20s. At this point, the only itinerary we have is that we'd probably like to spend a full week in BA in order to get a real flavor for the city, and we will likely rent an apartment during our stay there. We may or may not take a side trip to Uruguay (Colonia, maybe Punta). Assuming we have about 5 days after our BA stay, we want to select one other region to travel to, but I'm having a tough time deciding what would be best:

Iguazu - 5 days seems like far too long to stay here, although it sounds fantastic

Bariloche - the Lakes region sounds great for outdoor activities

Mendoza - we are into wine, but live in the Bay Area... maybe too similar?

Patagonia - sounds amazing, but are 4-5 days enough??

Salta - seems to be a favorite, but i know very little about the area

Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated!!

IT IS TOO MUCH. 2 DAYS IS ENOUGH.
IF YOU HAVE TIME VISIT MOCONA.WORTH 2 DAYS. JNGLE EXPERIENCE AND NOT VERY EXPENSIVE.

Mendoza - we are into wine, but live in the Bay Area... maybe too similar?

MENDOZA IS WORTH A VISIT BUT NOT ONLY BECAUSE OF THE WINE. LOTS OF OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES

PATAGONIA IS HUGE. YOU MUST BE THINKING ABOUT CALAFATE AND THE GLACIERS. IT IS ONLY ONE OF THE PLACES PATAGONIA HAS. IF YOU LIKE ADVENTURE 3 NIGHTS WOULD BE OK.MAYBE 4 IF YOU WANT TO BE IN TORRES DEL PAINE

MANY PLACES IN THE COUNTRY OFFER OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES. BARILOCHE IS ONLY ONE. AND IT IS ALSO IN PATAGONIA. STAY 4/5 NIGHTS AND YOU CAN CROSS TO CHILE.

PATAGONIA INCLUDES ALSO PENINSULA DE VALDEZ:WHALES, PENGUIN ROCKERIES, SEA LIONS. 3 NIGHTS AGAIN.

Salta - seems to be a favorite, but i know very little about the area.
DIFFERENT TO ALL THE REST THAT IS WHY PEOPLE LIKE IT. ME PERSONALLY FIND IT ONE OF THE NICEST PLACE. 3 MAYBE 4 NIGHTS IS NEEDED. PLS IF YOU GO TO SALTA YOU WILL WASTE YOUR TIME IN COLONIA.

BUT IF YOU HAVE TIME, THE BEACHES IN URUGUAY HAVE NO MATCH IN ARG. FANTASTIC IN PUNTA DEL ESTE.

Just make as many question you want from Salta area. WIne area but a very special. It is becoming the favorite because of the scenery, very varies, amny rock formations, nice weather, perfect for people to hike a little bit and enjoy.
Have a look to some of the review in TA or in the forum, specially about white torrontes wine. Nothing similar in the world!

i´m agree that patagonia is amazing.
Calafate and the glaciares is quite nice, but the only problem is tha u have to book the air ticket now because there is only one airline that flights there (aerolineas argentinas) and they have two flights a week.
Other thing is great too, is the lakecrossing from bariloche to Puerto Varas (in Chile)
Bariloche, and the seven lakes region is amazing.
Another thing in patagonia that yoou may consider is Ushuaia, is the southest point after antartida, with the beagle channel and all the history that this town have.

Hi.

A few thoughts. BA is a great city to visit- charming, lots of interesting neighborhoods and very inexpensive. A week in BA is great, though we did fine with 5 days there and 3 days in Mendoza. I've never been, but I've been told 1 day at Iguazu is just fine.

We really enjoyed Mendoza last August and are hoping to go again. I will be hot in December, January, but it will be a nice time to go.

If you go to Mendoza, I'd suggest using a tour guide. Our tour guide from a tour company named 'Tasting Mendoza' was great. We were very interested in the wineries and she got us into some really interesting, non touristy places. But she also took us to a farm that made gourmet foods, she cooked a delicious Argentine barbeque for us in the foothills of the Andes and she took us on an amazing drive throught the Andes. We also almost did some river rafting, but ended up not doing so.

Her name is Dolores and her web site is www.tastingmendoza.com. She's very smart, very charming and very friendly. Finally, the cost of her tour was MUCH less than what we were quoted by another guide in that area.

amp, I do not know what kind of informations you need about SAlta, feel free to make as many questions as you want. It is a great area, anfd the variety of scenries is amazing!
