Loved Argentina!
My friend and I returned a few weeks ago from a two-week trip to Argentina -- our first to that country or to anywhere in South America. We loved it!
I encourage everyone to go -- it's a beautiful country with something for everyone, incredible people, great food, and we had no problems (contrary to many who have posted here).
We spent time in Buenos Aires (fabulous - highly recommend Loi Suites in Recoleta), Iguazu (Sheraton is the best-located -- everything is at your door and the buffet dinner was one of the best I ever had), Calafate (highly recommend the Alto Calafate Hotel with its terrific glass-enclosed pool), and other locales. We had no problems with flights on Aerolineas and no problems with street crime anywhere. We felt very safe walking alone in Buenos Aires, even at night, using common sense of course. We met many Argentinians and all were eager to talk with Americans, had great English skills, were warm and welcoming and engaged us in extremely interesting conversations.
My most important recommendation is to book as much as you can through Isabel Llobet at Buenos Aires Tours. We "found" Isabel through this site -- her email is [email protected] -- and although we were initially skeptical about signing over our credit card info and basically most of our vacation to a stranger, she quickly became our friend. She is a gem!
Isabel is very responsive to emails, makes recommendations (we ate at Positano in Palermo one night on her recommendation and were the only tourists there), books the best tours and the best flights to maximize your trip, is extremely organized, and was a joy to work with. We especially enjoyed meeting her in person when we finally arrived!
Note to travelers -- none of our hotels would exchange more than $100 US per day, and same for ATM withdrawals at Argentinian banks, so plan ahead.
My only regret is that we didn't have enough time there. It's a big, big country! We are already in the "thinking stages" for the next trip, with more time in Patagonia and some time in Bariloche and Mendoza. Forget Europe; South America is the place to go!

oooooh, another convert....welcome.
We were thinking of Eastern Europe next year, then I asked my husband, one more trip to AR, he responded, yes, I'd rather go back there again.....So, now we're thinking of a third trip next year!

Thank you for your report, susanb_nj!
Frequent readers know I always suggest using or at least consulting with Isabel Llobet for the local part of your trip.
I am very pleased susanb_nj found her services useful.
When should we expect you back, susanb_nj?

I do not really understand Isabel`s bussiness, She must do it for love because she spends a lot of money phoning to check if everything is OK!!! LOL!
If anybody sees her, please tell her, if I do not answer it is because I am driving... LOL!
Isabel, please...

To All Argentine Fans:
Well, here is another happy visitor.
My wife and I spent two months there on our first trip, on our second we were there for 5 weeks, three in Chile on that same trip and are now in the planning stage for trip number three.
Obviously we were very well pleased with the earlier trips to want to go again.
Like many others, we found the people very friendly, helpful and generally a happy bunch in spite of their present difficult times.
Food - the best steaks and barbeque, Italian also outstanding.
Prices this last trip were very much to our advantage, unlike our first trip when their peso was pegged to the US dollar, 1:1.
Language was no problem for us but my advantage is that my wife grew up in Bs. As. so Spanish is her first language.
I don't see how anyone can go wrong traveling to Argentina.
One of my first choice travel spots.
I can not help but to boost Argentina as a place to travel to when ever the chance is presented.
Woodie

Susan I'm so glad you had a good time. We did too, and I have to agree about Isabel. She is the BEST!!
And , of course, Angie is too. If anyone is visiting the North West, Angie is the guide to have.
Between Angie and Isabel, we were in good hands.
