NW Pacific Side of Costa Rica -- things to see, places to stay, etc.

My husband and I will be traveling to Costa Rica for a friend's wedding in late August. We will be staying at an all inclusive Barceló Langosta Beach Resort in Tamarindo for 4 nights. Looking for places to visit the other nights. We are flying into Liberia and will likely rent a car. Any recommendations on other places to visit? I saw someone post about staying at the Ocotal Beach Resort. Is this going to be more of the same? Where do you recommend staying the rest of our trip. Would like to see as much as possible during our limited time. Thanks!

Tamarindo is a 'party' town, Playa Ocotal is a small beach with a hill behind it good diving and sportfishing.

After reviewing other posts, I'm thinking we should try to visit Arenal the remaining 3 nights, maybe cutting 1 more day out of our Tamarindo time? Thoughts? What's an ideal itinerary?

Arenal would be a good choice, particularly if you feel you've had enough beach time in Tam. Lots to see and do in the Arenal area.

While you are in Tamarindo, do travel up toward Flamingo/Potrero, looking around. Maybe even take the Congo Trail from Potrero through the country to Playa Hermosa, Playas del Coco area.

Also, while in Tamarindo, you might enjoy an outing to Guaitil, a few km outside Santa Cruz to see the pottery making town and pick up a special piece or two of it.

By the time you get to Arenal you will have seen a good part of the north Pacific coast and some interesting inland areas as well. Arenal, then, will provide you with an entirely different experience. Do the Cano Negro tour. Visit the Rio Celeste, or do the Hanging Bridges, SkyTrek, waterfall rappelling, La Fortuna falls. By all means, visit either Tabacon Hot Springs or Eco Thermales. So many choices. Do try to spend 3 nights at Arenal--you won't be sorry.

Beward of jellyfish in the waters off Playa Langosta! Our friends' 9 year old son got one in his swimming trunks and was quite traumatized before it found its way out!
