Seeking quiet, laid-back hotel close to Cancun

Thanks for all the forum help so far. I am flying into Cancun for four days at the beginning of March. Looking for a quiet, low-key hotel. Traveling solo and am not into clubbing or being around lots of heavy drinking. Akumal seemed like a good bet but Akumal Beach Resort is booked. What are some other options with great beach, swimming, and relaxed vibe for a solo woman? I think I would prefer all-inclusive, but am flexible.

Look at Mahekal, Las Palmas directly on the beach in Playa del Carmen or Luna Blue, Luna Sol, or a private condo off the beach. If you want condo info, mine is available. I think Playa would give you more options for dining, just people watching at night on 5th avenue and beach time at the beach clubs. I stay in Playa solo all the time and prefer it because there are so many people around and so many things to do if I choose to. If you want a larger AI in Playa or Playacar there are many to choose from including the Royal PDC, five RIU resorts, 2 Iberostar resorts and Sandos all within walking distance of 5th ave (some like the Iberostars will be a 15 minute walk).

I'd go to Isla Mujeres. Lots of small hotels, lots of really good and inexpensive restaurants. Nice beaches. I've never gone solo, but, wouldn't hesitate to do so.

Much more laid back than Playa del Carmen.

I also (again) will suggest Isla Mujeres. I think it's just what you are looking for.

Personally, traveling solo, I'd head to Playa del Carmen, because I like to have a busy town to walk around in and places to explore. But it sounds like you want something quieter.

I don't think Cancun has what you seek. Or aren't there other places to stay down in Akumal besides just that one?

There's a new area 10 minutes away from Cancun called Playa Mujeres. I've been in there twice and it's my perfect destination because it is Cancun but the new area, there are not so many hotels, the sunrise is amazing! ( more beautiful than Cancun), the hotels are new, there's not so many people since in here they look to relax and enjoy nature.

Why you don't check www.mayanexplore.com , they are travel specialists in Cancun and the Riviera Maya and they also guarantee the lowest hotel rates.

Also I found this for you, that can help you plan your vacations in Cancun http://www.mayanexplore.com/top_places_det.php?m=31&c=2

Also they have a special section for Akumal where you can see all the activities to do I'm there and hotels.

Oh the hotels that I recommend you in Playa Mujeres are: The Beloved Playa Mujeres and Excellence Playa Mujeres .

In the link that I shared you, there's a special section called Romantic Vacations and in there you'll see a review of this hotels.

Have you checked on the all-inclusives in Tulum? Quiet there, but some good restaurants on the beach outside the AIs also. Excellent beaches.

I own a condo in Playa also and I often go there solo also. I would also head to Playa as others said above. You can do as much or as little off the beach there as you want, and it woudl give you a lot of options for restaurants.

Isla Mujeres would be a great pick, many women travel there solo, will be going back for 3-4 days this May then going to Akumal staying on Half Moon Bay in a condo. I do NOT recommend AI for Isla, that small island has something like 130+ restaurants in all price ranges with terrific food.

But if you want AI, maybe look at CRT in Xpu-Ha beach, adults only AI, great beach, only 10 minute cab ride from Akumal. Have not stayed but have friends who stay there and love it.

Also, look into NOW JADE, the AI in Puerto Morelos, 20 min south by ADO bus from Cancun airport. Puerto Morelos is smll town, mainly a fishing community, and might be waht you are loking for regarding laid back and quiet. And there is very good snorkeling there, requires a short bat ride but is good.

I have friends who have stayed twice at NOW JADE and they really love it. Gets good reviews for the suites, food, pools, beach, service, etc,

I think, if I were going solo and didn't do that all the time in Mexico, I would go to a place that had more people than Tulum or Puerto Morelos especially if you want to be out and about a little bit. Cancun would not be a choice just because it's more highrise and less local. Playa has a lot of the right vibe for being alone if you want but also having people around. If you plan on staying inside the AI all the time then it really wouldn't matter although I did stay at an AI once by myself and it was fine except at dinner. Felt a little weird eating by myself and I didn't want to do it again. When I'm solo I also do take out alot, especially in the summer when the restaurants can get hot.

OP said she is looking for relaxed vibe, swimming, no clubbing and said that she had determined that Akumal was a good fit. Akumal is pretty quiet. That is why I suggested looking into Tulum or Puerto Morelos. As I said, I personally would go to Playa as well, like colokid.

Me too. Traveling solo I don't like to feel too "isolated".

IF you stay in the north end of Playa, near where my condo is around Calle 40 and 5th Ave, it is quiet there. But close enough to many good restaurants and shopping that has sprung up in the last few yrs, and the beach there is alos nice and quiet (CoCo beach). I am not suggesting my condo as that would be advertising, and it is rented thru April anyways, but there is a nice small hotel on 5th Ave and between 38th St. and 40th St. called Hotel Casa Ticul. It is not AI, but you might want to look into it.

Casa Ticul is the northernmost hotel in Playa, and is small, boutique, and very nice ( I have looked at rooms and pool there).

And there ae many very good restaurants in a 2 block radius- French, Thai, Itlian, Seafood, Mexican, Nouveau Cusine, heath food, on and on. The north end is really nice, and much more normal (like a community) and quiet than the rest of Playa. But if you decide you want to get more action, you just walk about 10 blocks down 5th Ave and you are at the pedestrian part of 5th Ave.
