Sid, do you mean beaches in BA city? there are "beaches" in the north suburbs (like Vicente Lopez or San Isidro) but they are not good, there is river, not sea, and quite polluted.
Are you referring to the "costa Atlantica", 400 km from BA? those are good beaches, not Caribbean style, but nice. Feel free to e-mail me for more info.

Sid,the (nice)closest beach to BA is Pinamar, 380 km from BA. Punta del Este in Uruguay is gorgeus, it is a 3 hours trip in hydrofoil from Buenos Aires or a 1/2 hour flight from the domestic airport. Mar del Plata, as Enrique suggests, is another option, but tends to be packed with locals in January, even more this year, when the devaluation will keep the locals inside Argentina for their holidays.

Hi Sid, I agree with the former inf.
the best beach and closest beach is Punta del Este , in Uruguay.
This is a very nice resort, of international statue with the most beautiful beaches you can dream of.THere arebeaches with waves and without waves, water is blue and sand is white, lots of action. Lots of everything.
This is only some 200 miles from Buenos Aires , may be less. By plane it takes 20 minutes. There are other means of transportation. Also you can get packages all included in Bue, hotel+air. Good luck.
