White water rafting near arenal?
are there any decent white water rafting rivers near arenal? How far away is the Sarapiqui or the Pacuare? I have heard the Pacuare is class IV and quite intense. I have never been WW rafting. Should I go for the Sarapiqui instead?

Pacuare is supposed to be awesome. Have not been, but I've been on class IV and V rapids in the US. If you're adventureous you'll be fine. However Pacuare is 3 hours (East/southeast) from San Jose and is ususally done as a trip out of San Jose. Arenal (3 hours North of San Jose) is too far. The Sarapiqui is the only option from Arenal I believe.

We were in Arenal in June of 05 and the water was quite low so our WW trip turned out to be inflatable kayaks instead. Not exactly your class IV rafting adventure but fun nonetheless. Hearing the volcano rumbling as you were on the river is an experience I can still pull up from my audio memory bank!

Check out desafio adventure company. We did the rio arenal a few years ago in March, low water then, but the scenery was gorgeous and the river still fun. It's very close to La Fortuna so you don"t waste lots of time driving there.
