Road trip Fussen to Venice in winter

We plan to rent a car in Venice and drive to Fussen in late December, I am a little worried about road conditions ice Etc. Can any one let me know what to expect? We are from Australia so we have no experience with snow and ice.

Hi Wolfgang.

Seems like a bad idea to me.
1. you are not used to driving in winter, there can be snow, so that means you would have difficulties or would have to stick to highways, not the best scenic travel
2. you rent in Germany, drop off in Italy - check the fees, they can be enormous.
3. we drive on the right side of the way,.
4. don't drive upon arrival, best way to get killed - friends of mine did that in Australia and got a crash the day of arrival
5. it is a short trip, it will take you half a day of travel : you sure you can't find another solution (trains are great in Europe).

Mfg

A train ride from Venice to Ulrichsbruecke-Fuessen would take about 7 1/2 hrs. Change at Verona, Innsbruck and Garmisch.
There is also a daily overnight train Venice dp 20.57 - Munich ar 6.10 (Fares start at 39 EUR for seats, 59 EUR for sleeperettes and 79 EUR for beds).
Connecting train Munich dp 6.53 - Fuessen ar 8.55

The train trip between Verona and Innsbruck goes over the Brenner Pass and is very scenic. The same is true for the shorter trip between Innsbruck and Garmisch-Partenkirchen. This won't be a "lost" travel day.

Apart from car drop off issues you also have to consider that travelling through Italy, Austria and Germany there are certain requirements that cars must meet in winter conditions - snow tyres, snow chains etc which not only vary from country to country but also within certain regions of those countries.

Maybe the simplest solution would be to fly from Venice to Munich and hire a car in Germany.

The whole trip can be got for less than EUR 50: EUR 8,70 for the train from Venezia S. Lucia to Verona Porta Nuova and EUR 39 for the combination of trains and bus from Verona to Füssen.
You can book them in advance on www.trenitalia.com/tcom-en respectively www.bahn.de/p_en/view/index.shtml. Both are payment by credit card and pdf tickets for printing at home.

tonfromleiden - why do you think someone from Australia wants to go to Fussen?

In late December, you cannot count on a scenic trip through the Alps. Chances are high so see clouds and fog, rain or snow and no scenery.

Yes, it can be snowing in late December. However, the motorways are usually clearled quickly, especially on the Brenner motorway which is heavily used by trucks and one of the main traffic arteries across the Alps. But a severe snowstorm can cause a congestion which might make you loose several hours.

And then you have the problem that picking up a car in Italy and returning it in Germany may cost you a hefty fee (between €500 and €1000, depending on the car rental agency).

After all, taking the train Füssen or the plane to München would be the better option for you.

I would not make this trip as my maiden voyage into driving through this part of Europe without any experience in driving in winter conditions. Go when the weather is likely to be clement, or pick another part of Europe to travel through in winter. I live in Europe, have years of experience driving in snowy/icy and mountainous conditions, have always driven on the right, and would never attempt this myself. The trucks alone put me off this sort of trip in winter.

If it's snowy, sleeting, icy, and foggy in that part of the world in lte December, I think you'll have your hands full just getting on or off trains or planes and trying to enjoy sightseeing at your destinations, never mind driving through a big mountain range.

The title and text are opposite> One says Fussen > Venice and the other says Venice > Fussen . . . but no matter which it is . . . bad idea.
